Background

Gerald O. Whittington served as Senior Vice President for Business, Finance and Technology at Elon University from January 1992 until his retirement from the full-time role (sources place the end of his tenure between 2019 and 2021), after being hired by then-President J. Fred Young. Over more than three decades he became one of the central architects of Elon's transformation from a regional college into a nationally ranked university, overseeing four strategic plans during which enrollment roughly doubled and the physical campus expanded several-fold. His portfolio of responsibilities spanned business and finance, human resources, facilities, information technology, campus safety, and planning, design and construction, and he served as Corporate Treasurer of the Elon University Board of Trustees. He also helped steer the institution through the 2007–2009 financial crisis.

Before Elon, Whittington was Vice President for Business and Finance at Agnes Scott College and held administrative posts at the University of Virginia, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds an undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill and an MBA from Duke University, and has more than 50 years of experience in higher education.

Today Whittington continues at Elon as Senior Vice President Emeritus, Special Assistant to the President, and an adjunct associate professor in the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education. He is also Principal and President of Whittington Consulting LLC, where he advises on financial analysis, long-range and strategic planning, professional coaching, and bond-covenant analysis. He is affiliated with the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education and is active with NACUBO and SACUBO.

In 2018 he was named national Distinguished Business Officer of the Year by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) — the organization's highest honor. In March 2025 Elon awarded him the Elon Medallion, its highest recognition for meritorious service, and dedicated a residence hall, Gerald O. Whittington Hall, in his name.

  • If approached as an investor, treat the "seed-stage angel" classification as unconfirmed and verify directly with him before relying on it.

Notable Investments
