Gerard Buckley

Gerard Buckley is the founder, president and CEO of Jaguar Capital Inc., a Toronto-based advisory and angel-investment practice he established in 2008. He describes himself as helping companies strategically plan for accelerated growth, and he leads a management-consulting practice with mandates focused on growth entrepreneurial companies. His post-nominals — BBA, FICB, ICD.D, Acc.Dir., CMC, KStG — reflect a career spanning banking, corporate governance, and certified management consulting. Over more than three decades in financial services, he has worked on merger-and-acquisition teams that transacted over $10 billion in deal flow, including a long tenure at Scotia Capital (Scotiabank) before moving into the angel and advisory world.

He is best known in the Canadian startup ecosystem for his leadership of Maple Leaf Angels, one of Toronto's largest angel networks (founded 2007), where he served for several years as Chairperson of the Board of Directors and was recognized as Angel of the Year in 2015 for his commitment to the MLA community and his mentorship within the start-up ecosystem. Under his involvement, the MLA network reports having invested tens of millions of dollars across dozens of Canadian companies, and MLA later launched the MLA48 seed fund vehicles.

Buckley has also held ecosystem and public-policy roles: Entrepreneur in Residence at INcubes (a Toronto internet accelerator) and a member of the Small and Medium Enterprise advisory committee to the Ontario Securities Commission, plus prior board service including an exempt-market dealer and a TSX Venture-listed public company. His education includes a BBA in finance and accounting from Mount Saint Vincent University (1985), an executive development program at Western University's Ivey Business School (2001), and a director-education/corporate-governance program at the University of Toronto (2009); he is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB) and a certified corporate director (ICD.D).

Beyond Jaguar Capital, Buckley operates in the mortgage/finance space (the Buckley Mortgage Team, based in Collingwood, Ontario), reflecting a broad finance-and-advisory footprint alongside his angel activity.
