Background
Girish Nadkarni is a veteran climate- and energy-technology investor with roughly two decades of venture experience spanning both operating and investing roles. He is best known as the President of TotalEnergies Ventures (previously Total Energy Ventures / Total Carbon Neutrality Ventures), the corporate venture arm of French energy major TotalEnergies, which he led from around 2017 after joining the company in 2015. There he oversaw a portfolio of roughly 50 companies and directed more than $1 billion in strategic energy-transition investments, and he led the creation of Hy24, a ~$2 billion clean-hydrogen infrastructure fund.
Before Total, Nadkarni founded and served as President of ABB Technology Ventures, the corporate VC unit of the Swiss-Swedish industrial group ABB, and was a Director of OGCI Climate Investments. His earlier business career was operational and strategic rather than purely financial: he began as an attorney on Wall Street focused on international banking and M&A, then held roles across Prudential, GE Capital and General Electric (strategy and business development) and United Healthcare (head of operations).
Academically, Nadkarni holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Bombay (where he was a gold medalist) and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was named a Baker Scholar (top ~5% of his class).
Since stepping back from TotalEnergies, he has become a widely networked independent investor and advisor. In February 2023 he joined the Strategic Advisory Board of Clean Energy Ventures, alongside figures such as former U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. He also sits on the board of Gentari (the clean-energy arm of Malaysia's Petronas), serves on the advisory committee of UCLA's Institute for Carbon Management, and advises funds including Siemens Energy Ventures and OGCI Climate Investments. He has been a repeat honoree on the Global Corporate Venturing Powerlist.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Decarbonization at scale is the through-line. Nadkarni backs technologies with "real, gigaton-scale impact" on carbon neutrality — his stated framing when joining Clean Energy Ventures: *"It is an honor... to have a hand in supporting the world-changing technologies with real, gigaton-scale impact."*
- Core sectors: renewables and distributed energy, energy storage, green hydrogen and derivative fuels, grid/digital-energy software, smart and electric mobility, carbon capture/utilization, and circular-economy plays like bioplastics and recycling.
- Prefers B2B and deep-tech commercialization. His TotalEnergies mandate emphasized startups helping companies cut energy consumption or carbon intensity — technologies that must cross from lab to industrial deployment.
- Discipline on valuations. He has publicly flagged concern about overvalued climate-tech startups (Axios, 2023), signaling a preference for realistic pricing and defensible commercialization paths over hype.
- Operator-investor lens. Having run corporate VC units and held operating roles at GE and UnitedHealthcare, he weighs go-to-market, industrial scale-up, and strategic-corporate fit — not just technology.
- Check sizing: as a corporate/strategic investor he typically wrote mid-size venture and follow-on checks (~$5M–$50M), frequently syndicating alongside other strategics and financial VCs.
