Glenn Hutchins

Glenn Hutchins (born 1955 in Virginia) is a veteran American private-equity and technology investor. He graduated from The Lawrenceville School (1973) and Harvard College (BA, 1977), then completed a simultaneous JD/MBA from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School in 1983. He began his career as a credit analyst at Chemical Bank before entering private equity at Thomas H. Lee Partners (1983–1992). In 1992 he left to serve as a senior adviser on economic and healthcare policy for the Clinton presidential transition and administration, after which he became a senior managing director at The Blackstone Group (1994–1999).

In 1999 Hutchins co-founded Silver Lake Partners — one of the first and largest technology-focused private-equity firms — alongside Roger McNamee and David Roux, and helped build it into a multi-tens-of-billions-of-dollars franchise before departing in 2012. He then launched North Island, a private investment firm, and in 2020 co-founded North Island Ventures with his son James Hutchins and former Digital Currency Group investor Travis Scher, focusing the venture arm on early-stage crypto and Web3.

Beyond investing, Hutchins holds a long list of institutional and civic roles. He served as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (2011–2020), chairing its Audit and Risk Committee, and sits on the boards of AT&T, Banco Santander, CoreWeave, and Singapore's GIC (Investment Board and International Advisory Board). He is co-chair of the Brookings Institution's board of trustees, chair of CARE, and has been a director of Digital Currency Group. He was a co-owner of the Boston Celtics from 2003 to 2025.

Hutchins is also a major philanthropist through the Hutchins Family Foundation, funding the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at Brookings ($10M, 2013), the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard, Harvard house renewal, and the Obama Presidential Center.
