Background
Gonzalo Santos is a Managing Director at Advent International, based in Madrid, where he leads much of the firm's investing activity in Spain across the business & financial services, consumer, and healthcare sectors. He joined Advent in 2015 and, per the firm, has advised on eight investments over the course of his career, two of them at Advent.
Before Advent, Santos spent roughly nine years at TPG and what is now Sixth Street in London, where he oversaw Spanish coverage for both the Private Equity and the Special Situations businesses. Earlier, he worked for four years in the investment banking division of Goldman Sachs in London. His career began in law: he is a member of the Madrid Bar and briefly practiced in the Mercantile (commercial) Law team at Uría Menéndez before moving into finance.
He holds a dual degree in Business Administration and Law (E-3) from ICADE (Universidad Pontificia Comillas) in Madrid. On his firm profile he frames his move into finance as "a way to make the best use of my education and to satisfy my curiosity."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Advent's global private equity funds, targeting control buyouts and majority growth positions in established, market-leading companies — this is institutional PE capital, not angel or seed funding.
- Sector concentration in business & financial services, consumer, and healthcare, with a strong track record of buy-and-build / consolidation plays in fragmented markets (most visibly dental in Spain).
- Emphasis on operational value creation post-investment: in Donte, Advent cites investing €40m+ in clinical quality and €35m+ in technology while scaling the platform.
- Focus on Spain/Iberia as a regional lead within a global platform, frequently backing founder- or family-owned businesses and executing add-on acquisitions.
- Stated ambition centered on building durable market leaders — on the Donte exit he said the outcome "validates DONTE's position as a market leader in Spain and sets the stage for its continued success."
Notable Investments
- Donte Group (formerly Vitaldent) — Spain's leading dental clinic platform. Advent backed it in 2019 and grew it from ~150 clinics to over 400 across four brands, later merging Donte and Dentix; Santos sat on the board and led the deal for Spain.
- Seedtag — Madrid-based leader in contextual advertising across EMEA and LATAM. Advent acquired a majority stake in November 2022 (reported at roughly €250m). Santos is associated with the deal at board level.
