Gordon Duff

Sir Gordon Duff (born 27 December 1947) is a British medical scientist and academic whose career has spanned clinical medicine, molecular immunology, national science and drug-safety policy, and — more recently — biomedical finance. He read medicine at St Peter's College, Oxford (BA 1969, BM BCh 1975) and earned a PhD in neuropharmacology from the University of London in 1980. After joining Edinburgh Medical School in 1984, he became the inaugural Lord Florey Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Sheffield in 1990/1991, where he served until 2014 and also held roles as Faculty Research Dean and Director of the Division of Genomic Medicine. His research focused on the genetics of the inflammatory response, cytokines and tumour necrosis factor; he has authored over 400 peer-reviewed articles, co-founded the journal *Cytokine*, and is a past president of the International Cytokine Society.

Duff is closely associated with UK science and medicines policy. He chaired the UK Committee on Safety of Medicines, was inaugural Chair of the Commission on Human Medicines, and served as Chairman of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA, 2013–2014). He was knighted in 2007 for services to public health, recognition tied in part to his leadership of the expert inquiry into the 2006 TeGenero/Theralizumab (TGN1412) "elephant man" clinical-trial disaster. From 2015 to 2019 he chaired the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

In 2014 he stepped down from the MHRA to become Principal of St Hilda's College, Oxford — notably the college's first male head — a post he held until 2021 (the origin of the "Principal" title and the st-hildas.ox.ac.uk contact details in the source data). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1999) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2008), and was named in the UK Science Council's "Top 100" practising scientists in 2014.

More recently his work has shifted toward funding biomedical innovation. He is co-inventor on roughly 35 biotech and diagnostic patents, co-founder of the biotech company Sitokine Ltd, Chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board of Silence Therapeutics plc (an RNA-interference therapeutics company), and co-chair — with MIT Sloan's Professor Andrew W. Lo — of the "Health of Nations" fund, a large-scale securitised vehicle designed to finance global drug development. He is also President of the United in Diversity Foundation, working toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
