Full Name
Gordon Shaw
Title
Partner, EQT Private Capital Asia (formerly Managing Director, Baring Private Equity Asia)
Firm
BPEA EQT / EQT Private Capital Asia (formerly Baring Private Equity Asia, "BPEA")
Firm Type
Private equity (growth & buyout) — not an angel; the stub "Angel Investors / Seed Round" label appears to be a mis-tag
Investment Stage
Growth equity, buyout, and significant-minority investments (BPEA/EQT is a large-cap Asian PE firm; check sizes typically in the tens to hundreds of millions of dollars)
Check Size
Deal-dependent; e.g., led a $10M Series A minority stake in CBX Software (2022). BPEA EQT funds are multi-billion-dollar vehicles, so equity checks are generally $10M+ and often much larger.
Target Company Profile
Founder-led, market-leading companies — often established, cash-generative businesses in Greater China with strong management teams
Sector Focus
Generalist across BPEA/EQT's mandate, with experience spanning technology/software, financial services, and industrials
Geographic Focus
Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan), within a pan-Asia platform
Location
Greater China (BPEA Shanghai office; Hong Kong SAR per LinkedIn)

Background

Gordon Shaw is a long-tenured private-equity investor at Baring Private Equity Asia (BPEA), which he joined in 1998. At BPEA he served as a Managing Director responsible for the firm's investments in Greater China and as Vice Chairman of the firm's Exit & Liquidity Committee. When BPEA merged with the Swedish investment firm EQT in 2022 (rebranding to BPEA EQT), he continued as a Partner on the EQT Private Capital Asia team.

Before BPEA, Shaw was a Director at AIG Global Investment Corporation (Asia) Ltd. in Hong Kong and led the Equity Investment Department at Nan Shan Life Insurance in Taiwan. Earlier in his career he worked in Citibank's Asian Private Equity and Corporate Finance departments, and began his career as a Senior Design Engineer at Schlumberger Technologies in San Jose, California — an engineering-to-finance path that is relatively unusual among Asian PE investors.

Shaw holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taiwanese, giving him deep coverage across the Greater China markets he invests in.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through a large-cap Asian private-equity platform (BPEA EQT), primarily via growth-equity, buyout, and significant-minority structures rather than early-stage/seed rounds.
  • Focuses on Greater China — mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan — leveraging local-language fluency and decades of on-the-ground relationships.
  • Backs founder-led, category-leading companies. On the CBX Software deal he praised the company as "the best-in-class platform for total sourcing management," emphasizing its founder-led team and top-tier retail/enterprise customer base as reasons to invest.
  • Sector-agnostic within BPEA/EQT's remit, with demonstrated interest in enterprise/supply-chain software and technology, alongside financial services and industrials.
  • Values capital that funds concrete growth levers — product development, geographic expansion, and strategic M&A — rather than pure runway.

Notable Investments

  • CBX Software (now TradeBeyond) — Led BPEA's $10M Series A round (May 2022); a retail supply-chain / total-sourcing-management SaaS platform. BPEA took a significant minority stake while the founders retained majority control.
  • Broader BPEA/EQT context: as MD for Greater China and Vice Chairman of the Exit & Liquidity Committee, Shaw has been involved across the firm's China portfolio and exit activity over 25+ years, though most individual deals are not publicly attributed to him by name.
