Background
Dr Graeme Wald is a life sciences investor and biotech executive based in Melbourne with more than 20 years of experience across biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare investment and research, spanning both the buy side and sell side. He trained as a scientist before moving into capital markets: he holds a PhD in Chemistry (1987–1991) and an MBA (1993–1995) from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, worked as a research/industrial chemist in South Africa and the United States, was a Student Fellow at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, and in 2019 completed a Certificate in the Executive Course in Negotiations at Harvard Business School.
Wald began his markets career as a sell-side analyst, becoming the top-rated analyst at Merrill Lynch in South Africa for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector. After moving to Australia he joined UBS as a transport analyst, then joined Wilson HTM in 2003 covering biotech, pharma and healthcare — work for which he was named Australia's top-rated analyst in the sector by StarMine in 2007 (as measured by investment returns and recommendations). He subsequently moved to the buy side as Investment Director at Bioscience Managers, a specialist life science fund manager, and has run his own advisory vehicle, Gravitas Consulting & Investments Pty Ltd, as a director since 2012.
In August 2016 Wald joined OneVentures — one of Australia's leading venture capital managers (then ~A$170M FUM, including the OneVentures Healthcare Fund III) — as a Principal / Venture Partner on the life sciences and healthcare investment team. There he worked alongside founders Dr Michelle Deaker and Anne-Marie Birkill on healthcare deals and portfolio leadership. He also took active company-building roles tied to the firm's portfolio, serving as founding Chairman and acting CEO of ProTA Therapeutics (2016–2019), a OneVentures-funded developer of immunotherapy for peanut allergy in children. Earlier, he was a Non-Executive Director of NexVet Biopharma (2013–2015) and Chairman of its Risk & Audit Committee, helping guide the animal-health company to its NASDAQ listing.
More recently, Wald has stepped into an operating role as Chief Executive Officer and Director of Myrio Therapeutics (Myrio Tx), a Melbourne-based immuno-oncology company developing T-cell therapeutics against intracellular targets via its proprietary Retained Display (ReD) platform, working alongside co-founders Ben Kiefel (COO) and Matthew Beasley (CSO).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in life sciences and healthcare — biotech, pharma, medical and immunotherapy/immuno-oncology — drawing on a science PhD plus two decades of analyst and fund-management experience.
- Backs companies he can help commercialize and globalize, with a track record of guiding portfolio companies toward licensing deals and US listings (e.g., NexVet's NASDAQ IPO).
- As a OneVentures Principal, operates within a firm that "invests in high-growth and transformative technology and life sciences companies," providing both human and investment capital and taking active leadership and fundraising roles in portfolio companies.
- Comfortable taking hands-on governance and executive roles (chairman, acting CEO, audit-committee chair), signaling a preference for deep, active involvement rather than passive checks.
- Drawn to large unmet-need markets — on ProTA he framed food allergy as "a significant market opportunity."
