Background

Greg Vanclief is a senior executive at Wesley Clover International, the private global investment and holding company founded and chaired by Welsh-Canadian telecom entrepreneur Sir Terry Matthews (founder of Newbridge Networks and Mitel). Vanclief holds the title of Executive Vice President, Portfolio Business Strategy, and is also described as Managing Director, Global Investments. In these roles he provides C-level support and guidance to Wesley Clover portfolio companies as they scale and mature, and collaborates on their expansion into international markets. He is described as a tech-industry veteran with roughly three decades of leadership and entrepreneurship experience. He studied Political Science and Business at Queens University of Charlotte.

Vanclief's core mandate is running Wesley Clover's Alacrity Global program — a worldwide network of technology partnership funds. Under the Alacrity model, Wesley Clover establishes local micro funds (typically US$10–20M), identifies local partners and fund managers, and recruits entrepreneurial teams (often through university partnerships) to build companies against validated market needs. As Vanclief frames the approach: "We're identifying a customer and a customer need first…and then trying to find a market." Founders pass through a Kanata-based bootcamp with the L-Spark accelerator, gaining exposure to Wesley Clover companies, resources and IP before scaling globally.

Wesley Clover, founded in Ottawa in 2002, reports having backed more than 140 founders with over US$1.0 billion in direct investment, producing more than 20 IPOs and over US$3.5 billion in public returns. Vanclief sits at the center of the firm's global startup-creation engine, setting "the broad strokes of the global strategy" from Ottawa's Kanata North technology hub.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Capital-efficient, not valuation-chasing: "Invest less overall cash, but place it into more capital-efficient, flexible and dynamic businesses." Vanclief favors small, early-stage funds where Wesley Clover participates in value creation and market growth rather than relying on inflated valuation multiples.
  • Value-based exits: Emphasis on "value-based profitable exits" over chasing high headline valuations.
  • Customer-need-first company building: Companies are built around a validated customer and need before a product, enabling rapid creation with global market potential from day one.
  • Stage & check: Seed / early stage, deployed through local Alacrity micro funds of ~US$10–20M per market.
  • Sectors: Cloud/SaaS, digital transformation, cloud IT migration, process automation, and customer/employee experience intelligence.
  • Global-first, hub-supported: Local founders and fund managers execute in-market; Ottawa/Kanata sets global strategy and provides coaching, resources and IP.

Notable Investments

  • Pisano — Istanbul-based customer/employee experience platform (AI assistant "Leo"); an Alacrity Turkey company that secured outside funding, cited by Vanclief as a market-validation success.
  • Martello Technologies — Ottawa digital experience monitoring platform for Microsoft, Mitel and Zoom environments (publicly listed).
  • Solink — Ottawa-based data/video analytics platform connecting security video with business data.
  • Newbridge Networks and Mitel — foundational Terry Matthews / Wesley Clover-lineage companies frequently cited as the firm's track record (multi-billion-dollar outcomes).
