Background

Greg Baylin is a founding member of ONCAP, having joined the firm in 2000, shortly after Onex Corporation established the ONCAP platform in 1999. He spent the bulk of his career as Managing Partner and Co-Head of ONCAP, where he carried oversight responsibility for the firm's operations — including investment decision-making, team development, and the relationship with both Onex and ONCAP's limited-partner investors. Over more than two decades he has been involved in every stage of the investment cycle, from sourcing new opportunities to building businesses alongside operating management teams to exiting investments.

Before joining ONCAP, Baylin worked in investment banking at Scotia Capital Markets, serving in the firm's Investment Banking business unit across Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

Today Baylin serves as a Senior Advisor to ONCAP, a transition from his former operating-leadership role. In that capacity he provides mentorship to the ONCAP organization, advises on investment decision-making, participates in value creation by supporting portfolio (operating) companies, and assists the team in pursuing new opportunities. He continues to sit on multiple operating-company boards spanning ONCAP's industrial, services, and consumer sectors.

Note on the stub data: the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" labeling appears to be a data-source error. Baylin is a career private-equity investor at an institutional mid-market buyout firm; ONCAP does not make seed-stage angel investments.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Lower mid-market private equity, not venture/angel: ONCAP invests in established, profitable North American businesses, generally committing US$20–200 million of equity per deal.
  • Partnership with management: ONCAP describes itself as "partnering with North American headquartered businesses and their management teams" — a hands-on, value-creation model rather than passive capital.
  • Core sector emphasis: Industrials/manufacturing, business and consumer services, and consumer products — reflected in the portfolio companies Baylin has helped build.
  • Full-cycle involvement: Baylin's own track record spans "sourcing new opportunities, building businesses in collaboration with operating management teams, and exiting investments."
  • Both control and significant-minority positions: ONCAP pursues majority buyouts (e.g., Bradshaw Home) as well as significant-minority stakes (e.g., Wyse Meter Solutions).

Notable Investments

  • Wyse Meter Solutions (Concord, ON) — submetering and utility expense management for multi-residential/commercial markets; ONCAP acquired a significant minority interest in November 2018 and in 2024 launched its first continuation vehicle for the company.
  • Bradshaw Home (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) — designer/marketer of houseware products (kitchen tools, bakeware, food storage, cleaning); majority interest acquired December 2012, sold to Arbor Investments in October 2021.
  • Walter Surface Technologies — surface-treatment and metalworking products (industrials).
  • Precision Concepts International — precision components/medical and consumer packaging manufacturer.
  • Merrithew International — Pilates and mind-body equipment and education (consumer/services).
  • Ontivity — telecom infrastructure services.
  • Image Specialty Partners — dental support organization (healthcare services).
