Gregory Steinberg

Gregory Steinberg spent his core career at American Greetings Corporation, the Cleveland-based greeting-card and social-expression company, which he joined in 1996. He rose through the company's credit, finance, and treasury operations, serving as Assistant Treasurer, Executive Director of Investor Relations, and — from 2006 — Corporate Treasurer. As Treasurer he managed relationships with lenders and rating agencies, oversaw global cash management, foreign exchange, and risk management, and played a central role in the company's major M&A activity, including the acquisitions of Recycled Paper Greetings and Papyrus.

Effective March 1, 2014, Steinberg was promoted to Chief Financial Officer, succeeding Stephen Smith. As CFO he was responsible for the full breadth of the company's financial functions — accounting, audit, financial planning and reporting, investments, investor relations, real estate, retailer contract management, retailer financial services, risk management, shared services, tax, treasury, and corporate strategy. He was instrumental in structuring the management-led buyout that took American Greetings private off the NYSE (the Weiss family/Centerbridge transaction), and later helped lead the company's sale to Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. Earlier in his career he held finance roles including Assistant Treasurer at GrafTech International, and began in finance at a management company overseeing diversified auto-industry businesses.

Steinberg has since moved into academia and advisory work. He is an Executive in Residence in the Department of Economics and Finance at John Carroll University's Boler College of Business in University Heights, Ohio. Alongside teaching, he works as a consultant, executive advisor, and mentor on business strategy, leadership, mergers and acquisitions, and capital allocation, and is a frequent speaker at events hosted by major banks including Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, and KeyBank.

Outside his professional roles, Steinberg is deeply involved in civic and faith-based work in the Cleveland area. He has served on the finance and audit committees of Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries for more than 15 years, chairs the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association, is an active member of the Christian Business Men's Connection (CBMC), and has served as an advisory board member for FM Global, one of the world's largest commercial property insurers.
