Background

Guilherme Caldas Emrich was born on July 5, 1943, in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, and trained as an engineer, later completing graduate business studies in the United States and Europe. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of science-based entrepreneurship in Brazil. In 1976 he co-founded Biobrás alongside partners Marcos Mares Guia and Walfrido Mares Guia, developing domestic human-insulin production technology at a plant in Montes Claros. Biobrás grew to become one of the largest insulin producers in the world (cited as the fourth-largest during the 1980s–1990s) and dominated the Brazilian market until it was sold to Denmark's Novo Nordisk in 2001.

After the Biobrás sale, Emrich retained the company's R&D nucleus and spun it into Biomm S/A, a Nova Lima–based biotechnology firm that became one of Brazil's only publicly listed biotech companies. In parallel, in 1990 he founded the Biominas Foundation, which grew into the largest biotechnology cluster in Latin America and launched the pioneering Habitat incubator in 1997. He served as founder and president of Biominas's board of curators.

In 1999 he founded FIR Capital Partners, one of Brazil's first venture-capital management firms (at times partnered under the "DFJ FIR Capital" banner with Silicon Valley's Draper Fisher Jurvetson network). Through FIR he backed innovative technology and life-sciences companies, most famously Akwan, a search-technology startup created with UFMG professors that Google acquired in 2005 to seed its Latin American R&D center. FIR Capital reports having invested in 50+ companies over its history.

Beyond his own ventures, Emrich held numerous governance roles: he sat on the Board of Trustees of Fundação Dom Cabral for over 20 years, presided over the technical council of CSEM Brasil (from 2006), and served on boards including Holcim and Cedro Cachoeira. He was recognized posthumously as one of Revista Encontro's "Mineiros do Ano 2021." He died on November 9, 2021, of cardiorespiratory complications.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invested in seed and Series A technology and science-driven companies, with typical checks of roughly US$100K–US$5M (sweet spot ~US$1.5M).
  • Strong bias toward science- and deep-tech-based innovation — biotech, health tech, fintech, AI/data science, and enterprise software — reflecting his belief in backing entrepreneurs who "solve real problems."
  • Preferred exceptional, technically credible founders, frequently backing teams emerging from Brazilian universities (e.g., the UFMG professors behind Akwan).
  • Championed venture capital as an engine for Brazilian innovation at a time when the model barely existed locally; colleagues described him as "a man ahead of his time" who paired rare risk appetite with management sophistication.
  • Geographic focus centered on Brazil and Latin America, with selective exposure to the USA.

Notable Investments

  • Akwan Information Technologies — search/information-retrieval startup (founded 2000 by professors Berthier Ribeiro-Neto, Alberto Laender, and Nívio Ziviani); acquired by Google in 2005, becoming the base of Google's Latin American R&D center.
  • Grupo Oncoclínicas — oncology-care network; grew into a major Brazilian healthcare group and went public (IPO).
  • Devex Mining (Devex Tecnologia) — mining-software company; acquired (exit).
  • Biomm S/A — publicly listed biopharmaceutical company he founded from the Biobrás R&D nucleus.
  • FIR Capital portfolio companies (VC/PE): ABC da Construção, Alvos, Asaas (fintech), Axado, among 20+ others across enterprise applications, fintech, edtech, retail, and health.
