Background
Guillermo Bilbao is a Managing Director (announced in 2014 as a Managing Principal) of Arlon Group, the food- and agriculture-focused private-equity arm of Continental Grain Company, based in Arlon's New York office. He joined the executive leadership team responsible for the firm's North America and Latin America investing. He brings more than 30 years of combined financial and legal experience to the role.
The bulk of his career — roughly 26 years, from 1988 to 2014 — was spent at Rabobank, the Dutch international financial-services group widely regarded as a leading global food-and-agriculture bank. There he spent about 13 years in regional management across Latin America, with leadership roles reported to include president of Rabobank Chile and a regional management role for South America, and later a Managing Director role in Rabobank International's U.S. rural-retail business before departing in 2014.
Bilbao holds a BA from Princeton University (reported as History) and a JD from Harvard Law School, giving him an unusual blend of legal training and food-and-ag banking experience that fits Arlon's middle-market deal focus.
Arlon Group itself was formed by Continental Grain Company (in partnership with VR Investments) and at the time of his appointment managed roughly $830 million in assets, investing in middle-market food and agriculture private-equity opportunities from offices in New York and São Paulo, Brazil. Arlon's standalone website now redirects to Continental Grain Company, indicating its activities have been consolidated under the parent's investing platform.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in middle-market food and agriculture companies across the entire value chain — upstream production and animal feed/protein, midstream processing and manufacturing, and downstream distribution, food service, and retail.
- Geography: primary focus on North America and Latin America (Bilbao's specific mandate); the broader Continental Grain platform spans North America, Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
- Stage: growth equity and control/buyout investments in established middle-market businesses — not early-stage venture or seed, despite the stub classification.
- Why they say yes: deep sector specialization in food and agribusiness; Bilbao's Latin America banking network and legal background make cross-border food-and-ag deals (especially U.S.–LatAm) a natural fit.
- The 2014 formation of a Latin America Advisory Board alongside his appointment signals an emphasis on operator/advisor networks and local market knowledge in Latin American agribusiness.
Notable Investments
- Idaho Pacific Holdings & AgraWest Foods — manufacturers of dehydrated potato products for foodservice, industrial, bakery, and export channels; acquired by Arlon in June 2016.
- Cici's Pizza (CiCi's) — family-friendly unlimited pizza-buffet restaurant chain (~450 locations across 33 states).
- Alico, Inc. — Florida-based agribusiness and land-management company (citrus, sugarcane, cattle, land/resource conservation).
- The Coastal Companies — major distributor of fresh produce and dairy operating a multi-state delivery fleet.
- Latin American food/logistics holdings — including Mr. Veggy, Embaré, and TMov (food products and logistics).
