Background

Gustavo Huerta Vargas is the co-founder and CEO of BlueBox Ventures, which he helped launch in Morelia, Michoacán around 2012. He describes his firm as Latin America's largest network of incubators, accelerators, and "corporate venturing / corporate venture capital-as-a-service" programs. Under his leadership, BlueBox designs investment theses and runs innovation, entrepreneurship, and corporate venture programs on behalf of major corporations, and provides outsourced acceleration and investment advisory. The accelerator has been recognized by Mexico's INADEM and is affiliated with AMEXCAP (the Mexican Private Equity & Venture Capital Association).

Huerta's roots are in the restaurant industry, where he has more than a decade of operating experience. He co-founded and helped scale the fast-food chains Pollo Feliz and Pollo Costeño (organized under FoodOPx), which together operate 800+ locations across Mexico, the U.S., and Central America and employ well over 12,000 people. His path to venture investing was shaped by a formative failure: roughly eight years before his 2016–2019 interviews, a diversification into furniture importing and retail collapsed due to unfamiliarity with the industry, weak partnerships, and unsustainable growth, leaving him heavily indebted. He spent about two years transparently winding the business down — an experience he cites as central to his conviction that "the person is the company, not the reverse."

His interest in startups began after a fellowship exposed him to Argentina's entrepreneurial ecosystem; he returned to Mexico in 2009 and started convening entrepreneurs and organizing events at a time when he felt no meaningful ecosystem yet existed. Today he directs corporate venture and innovation programs for more than ten industry leaders — including Cinépolis, Volaris, Axtel, Grupo Expansión, Consejo Nacional Agropecuario, and Fundación Teletón. He is also co-author of the entrepreneurship book *Más allá del Business Plan*.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at Seed through Series B, with checks from $100K to $5.0M and a sweet spot around $1.5M.
  • Strong tilt toward PropTech, Real Estate & Construction, Food & Beverage, and Mobile/tech — sectors adjacent to his operating background and BlueBox's corporate partners.
  • Backs "disruptive startups that have the potential to redesign industries," favoring demonstrated innovation potential in early-to-mid stage companies.
  • Prioritizes founder character over the product — "the person is the company, not the reverse" — and values persistence without stubbornness, transparency in adversity, and openness to mentorship.
  • Operates a corporate-venturing model: much of his investing flows through theses built for corporate partners (Cinépolis, Volaris, Axtel, etc.), so a strong corporate/industry fit is a differentiator when he says yes.
  • Bullish on Mexico's ecosystem, which he calls "the most promising in Latin America," and has publicly predicted the region will produce a unicorn.

Notable Investments

  • BlueBox corporate venture programs — designs and runs venture/innovation programs for 10+ corporations including Cinépolis, Volaris, Axtel, Grupo Expansión, Consejo Nacional Agropecuario, and Fundación Teletón; these partnerships are the primary channel for BlueBox's deals.
  • Pollo Feliz & Pollo Costeño (FoodOPx) — fast-food chains he co-founded and helped scale to 800+ locations and 12,000+ employees across Mexico, the U.S., and Central America (operating ventures rather than portfolio bets, but central to his track record).
  • BlueBox accelerator cohorts — 28+ startups have gone through the program; Crunchbase records a handful of disclosed BlueBox Ventures investments, though specific startup-level portfolio names are largely undisclosed publicly.
  • *(Aggregator listings mention names such as "La Gofrera"; these are unverified against primary sources and should be confirmed directly.)*
