Background

Hanns Anders is an early-stage technology investor best known for his years leading robotics and AI deals at iRobot Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of Roomba-maker iRobot. He joined the unit around 2015, shortly after it was established, coming from Bay Area venture firm Claremont Creek Ventures. As Director / Investment Director he became one of the more active corporate investors in robotics and AI, and was recognized by Global Corporate Venturing as a "Rising Star" in 2016.

In January 2021 Anders left iRobot to join Amazon, where he works in Corporate Development and as an investor for the Amazon Alexa Fund — Amazon's venture arm focused on voice, AI, and connected-device startups. Since January 2022 he has also served as an Advisory Board Member at Alpha Network. He describes himself as an early-stage investor with an emphasis on frontier tech, connected hardware, and AI/ML.

On education, Anders holds a BS in Business from Wake Forest University (2003) and an MBA/MS in Entrepreneurial Strategy & Finance with a focus on Sustainable Systems from the University of Michigan's Stephen M. Ross School of Business (2011). His stated interests skew toward hardware and mobility — he has appeared as a Micromobility speaker and publicly notes he "prefers two wheels over four," consistent with his transportation and clean-energy investing themes.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Concentrates on Seed and Series A rounds; comfortable leading or co-investing at the earliest institutional stages.
  • Check size: Roughly $100K to $5M, typically around $1.5M, reflecting a mix of strategic corporate checks and early venture-scale investments.
  • Where he leans in: Physical/technical products — robotics, connected and frontier hardware, AI/ML, IoT — plus adjacent bets in health/digital health, clean energy, the built environment, transportation and micromobility.
  • What makes him say yes: A strategic fit with the corporate platform (human–robot interaction, voice/AI, connected devices for the home) and defensible technology. At iRobot he framed deals around long-term societal utility — e.g., robotics that keeps aging populations "active and engaged."
  • Investor style: Corporate/strategic VC, so a founder gets not just capital but potential distribution, data, and product partnerships with iRobot (past) or Amazon/Alexa (present).

Notable Investments

  • Intuition Robotics (ElliQ) — Anders led iRobot Ventures' strategic investment (2017) in the companion robot for older adults, alongside OurCrowd.
  • Matterport — 3D spatial-data / digital-twin platform (later went public via SPAC).
  • 6 River Systems — warehouse fulfillment robotics (later acquired by Shopify, then Ocado).
  • Labrador Systems — assistive home robots for older adults and people with mobility needs.
  • Invisible AI — computer-vision for manufacturing/industrial operations.
  • Synthesis AI — synthetic data for computer-vision model training.
  • Hasty.ai — data-annotation / ML training-data platform.
  • Jargon — localization tooling for voice and conversational apps.
  • SPAN — smart electrical-panel / home-energy company; an Amazon Alexa Fund portfolio company that Anders publicly championed around its ~$96M Series B2 led by Wellington Management (2023).
