Harris Barton

Harris Barton is a former NFL offensive tackle turned Silicon Valley investor. Born April 19, 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a four-year starter at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1982–1987), earning a BA in Finance in 1987 along with first-team All-American honors and ACC Outstanding Offensive Lineman recognition (1986). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2021. The San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the first round (22nd overall) in 1987, and over 12 seasons he won three Super Bowls (XXIII, XXIV, XXIX), was twice named first-team All-Pro (1992, 1993), and made the Pro Bowl in 1993.

Barton began building an investment career while still playing. In 1999 he co-founded Champion Ventures with 49ers teammates Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott, raising an initial ~$40 million largely from professional athletes and structuring it as a fund-of-funds across private equity, venture capital, and hedge funds. Champion Ventures was renamed HRJ Capital and grew to roughly $2.4 billion in assets at its 2008 peak before being acquired by Switzerland-based Capital Dynamics in April 2009, which used the deal to gain a Silicon Valley foothold.

In October 2010, Barton left Capital Dynamics to launch H. Barton Asset Management, an investment firm based in San Francisco. As founder and managing director, he manages a set of venture funds — both direct positions in up-and-coming VC-backed technology startups and fund-of-funds allocations into leading U.S. venture firms — with total assets under management reported at roughly $950 million. He lives in the Bay Area (Palo Alto) with his wife Megan and their four children.

Beyond investing, Barton is an active philanthropist. In 2004 he co-founded Champion Charities with Ronnie Lott, which has raised more than $20 million for brain cancer research and patient care (funding work at UCSF) — a cause driven by the loss of both of his parents to brain cancer. He has served on boards including REDF (now part of the Redefine alliance), The First Tee, the 49ers Foundation, and the Giants Community Fund.
