Background
Hercules Anthony Segalas was born March 21, 1935 in New York City and earned a B.S. from Yale University in 1956. He began his career on the operating side of the consumer-products industry, working at Procter & Gamble (1956–1965) and then International Flavors and Fragrances (1965–1968), giving him hands-on knowledge of the brands and categories he would later cover and advise for decades.
Segalas moved to Wall Street as a consumer-products securities analyst at William D. Witter, Inc. (1969–1976), building a reputation as one of the era's leading voices on household and personal-care companies. He then spent more than a decade at Drexel Burnham Lambert (1976–1988), rising from senior vice president to managing director and serving on the firm's board of directors from 1976 to 1988 — through Drexel's peak and its final years.
After Drexel, he became managing director and head of the consumer-products investment banking group at PaineWebber (1988–1999), again serving on the board, followed by senior roles at Schroder & Co. (1999–2000) and Salomon Smith Barney (2000–2001). In 2001 he teamed with former J.P. Morgan Chase banker Fuad Sawaya to launch the Manhattan-based consumer-products boutique Sawaya Segalas & Co., where he has been a partner since. The firm, later known as Sawaya Partners, merged with Canaccord Genuity in December 2021 to form CG Sawaya Partners.
Outside of finance, Segalas has been active in Nantucket civic life, serving on the board of the Nantucket Land Council (1982–1985), as a member of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital corporation (1984–1985), and as a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Deep, career-long specialization in the consumer-products sector — food & beverage, household and personal care, health & wellness, and home — informed by both operating experience (P&G, IFF) and decades of banking/analysis.
- His firm, Sawaya Segalas / CG Sawaya Partners, positions itself as "rigorously client-centric, not deal-centric," focusing exclusively on consumer companies rather than being a generalist bank.
- Professionally, his documented activity is later-stage M&A advisory and capital-raising for consumer brands; the "angel / seed" label in the source stub is not corroborated by public records, so treat any early-stage angel activity as unverified.
- The firm concentrates on four consumer segments: food & beverage, health & wellness, home & auto, and outdoors.
Notable Investments
- Snapple Beverages — the firm's consumer franchise is noted for helping achieve industry-defining multiples for the brand.
- OxiClean — consumer household-cleaning brand, cited among the firm's high-multiple exits.
- Method Products — premium eco-friendly home/personal-care brand.
- Babyganics — plant-based baby-care brand.
- Compeed — consumer health/wound-care brand.
