Background

Hilary Anne Coghill is one of the original founders of City Asset Management Plc, a London-based investment management firm incorporated on 1 February 1988. Companies House lists her as a person with significant control of City Asset Management, notified from 1 July 2016, with ownership of more than 25% and not more than 50% of shares, plus a separate trust-control entry.

City Asset Management says Hilary has been with the firm for more than 40 years and is proud that it remains co-owned by founding partners and staff. The firm’s 30th-anniversary history says City Asset Management was incorporated by Viv Coghill, Ian Mill and David Lesser; at launch, Hilary performed bookkeeping and researched collectives while Ian Mill focused on equities. The firm acquired Chartered Asset Management in 1990, later moved to Old Street in 2000, and moved to Bishopsgate in 2013.

Her current published role is Senior Adviser to CAM. Earlier press coverage identified her as Chief Investment Officer at City Asset Management; in 2008 she discussed allocation changes in response to inflation, including increased use of structured products, gilts and fixed-rate bonds. City Asset Management’s team page also says she has been involved in investment selection, especially structuring portfolios for tax efficiency and client objectives, and is part of the firm’s women’s initiative.

Before City Asset Management, Hilary began her career in medical research and later taught science while living in Kuwait. No verified university or formal education record was found in the reviewed public sources.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • City Asset Management’s stated goal is to “preserve and increase investors’ wealth,” while managing risk and avoiding permanent capital loss.
  • Hilary’s documented investment work is in investment selection for private-client portfolios, especially tax-efficient portfolio construction aligned with client aspirations.
  • CAM’s discretionary investment management approach uses a broad investment universe and states that, because it has no proprietary products, it is unbiased in selecting portfolio opportunities.
  • For AIM portfolios, CAM targets capital growth and Business Relief qualification through discretionary portfolios of AIM-listed shares.
  • CAM’s AIM approach is explicitly long term and business-owner oriented: it looks for profitable, understandable businesses, focuses on earning power and valuation, and seeks a margin of safety.
  • The publicly available record does not verify Hilary Coghill as an angel investor, seed investor, or direct startup backer.

Notable Investments

  • City Asset Management AIM Portfolio Service: Launched in 2004 to invest in AIM-listed companies expected to qualify for Business Relief; minimum client investment £100,000.
  • HICL Infrastructure: City Asset Management was reported in November 2025 as holding £17 million in HICL on behalf of private investors and opposing the proposed HICL/TRIG merger.
  • No verified angel/startup portfolio companies were identified in the sources reviewed; Hilary’s documented investment activity is through City Asset Management’s public-market and private-client investment services.
