Background

Himanshu Kohli is the co-founder and partner of Client Associates, a firm he launched in 2002 with fellow first-generation private banker Rohit Sarin. Widely credited with pioneering the "family office" concept in India, he built Client Associates into what is described as the country's first Multi-Family Office, now advising on assets of roughly US$6–7 billion for 1,300+ affluent individuals, families and large family offices. The firm operates across Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Patna, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Guwahati, and has publicly stated ambitions to expand into 5–6 tier-2 cities (including Pune) over three years.

Before founding Client Associates, Kohli spent his early career in investment and private banking, with roughly three decades of combined experience. He held roles at Deutsche Bank Private Banking, DSP Merrill Lynch and the London Forfaiting Group. He is known for developing "Portfolio Reallocation," a risk-management approach, and he publishes commentary through the firm's CA Monthly and contributes regularly to financial media.

Kohli holds a B.Com. (Hons.) from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), University of Delhi — where he is recognized as a distinguished alumnus — and a Master's in Finance and Control (MFC) from the University of Delhi, which awarded him a Distinguished Alumnus Award from its Department of Financial Studies in 2008. He is also listed among the founders/donors of Ashoka University.

His recognitions include Entrepreneur of the Year – Innovation in Financial Services (Entrepreneur India, 2023), the Outstanding Young Private Banker Award (2010), Wealth Management Thought Leader (2019) from the Association of International Wealth Management of India (AIWMI), and "The Most Prominent Asian Leader" from Citywealth, UK. Aggregator profiles also report he was named among top angel investors by Forbes India (2020) and Fortune India (2021).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Domain rooted in wealth management for founders and family businesses: His professional lens is advising HNW and UHNW entrepreneurs and family business owners — he describes Client Associates as a "private CFO" to India's ultra-wealthy.
  • Angel / seed-stage activity: Third-party profiles (Tracxn) list him as a personal angel investor in a small number (reported as ~4) of early-stage startups and a board member of one company; specific check sizes are not publicly disclosed.
  • Growth-of-India conviction: In firm strategy he emphasizes "tapping into the immense potential of emerging metros" and the rising wealth of HNIs/UHNIs in tier-2 cities — a bet on India's broadening affluence.
  • Stated ambition: "As Client Associates aspires to be India's most admired wealth management platform, we are tapping into the immense potential of emerging metros."

Notable Investments

  • Publicly named individual angel portfolio companies were not found in available sources; aggregator data (Tracxn) indicates he is an angel investor in roughly 4 startups and sits on the board of 1 company, but does not disclose their names.
  • Ashoka University — listed among the institution's founders/donors (philanthropic backing rather than a startup investment).
  • Client Associates (2002, co-founded with Rohit Sarin) — his principal venture; India's first Multi-Family Office, grown to ~US$6–7B in advised assets.
