Background
Howard A. Tullman is a Chicago-based entrepreneur, educator, writer, and venture investor. He is the General Managing Partner of G2T3V, LLC and Chicago High Tech Investment Partners, LLC, both described as early-stage venture funds based in Chicago. His official bio also describes him as an active board member for technology startups.
Tullman earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences in 1967 and a J.D. from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in 1970. Northwestern’s archive notes that his B.A. was in mathematics and economics; Northwestern Now reports that he graduated from law school with honors, was elected to the Order of the Coif, and chaired the editors of the Law Review. Before becoming a full-time entrepreneur, he practiced law in Chicago for about 10 years, focused on class-action litigation and Chapter 11 bankruptcy matters.
He has founded more than a dozen high-tech companies over a career spanning roughly 50 years. Northwestern notes that he founded CCC Information Services in 1980 and later led or founded multiple organizations in technology, education, media, and data businesses. He also served as president of Kendall College and co-founded Tribeca Flashpoint College in 2007.
Tullman served as CEO of 1871, the Chicago startup hub, from 2013 to 2018. Northwestern reported that during his four years at 1871 he quadrupled profits, doubled tenant companies to 500, and expanded the space from 50,000 to 150,000 square feet. He later became the founding executive director of the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship at Illinois Tech and has taught entrepreneurship and change management at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and Northwestern Law.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- G2T3V describes itself as “an early stage investment firm committed to financing and developing disruptive innovations.”
- The firm says it limits investments to areas where its team has “personal experience, industry connections and specific expertise” across markets, business processes, customers, competition, technology, or regulation.
- The firm positions itself as hands-on: it expects to take board or advisor roles and be active in portfolio-company management and operations.
- Sector emphasis is grounded in Tullman’s operating background: insurance, automotive, media and marketing, data management and analytics, customer satisfaction management, technology, and education.
- Tullman’s own Inc. writing emphasizes pragmatic, cash-aware company building. In a June 16, 2026 column, he wrote that in tight markets founders should focus less on interim valuations and more on getting necessary capital closed, summarizing the advice as “flat is the new up.”
- He has also written that software startups facing AI commoditization should stay lean, avoid over-raising, keep a quick exit in view when appropriate, and build defensibility around customer interaction and human contact.
