Background

Hubertus Leonhardt is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA, since 2000) and a certified German tax advisor. Before entering private equity he worked as a project/corporate-finance manager in the Corporate Finance department of Arthur Andersen GmbH & Co. KG in Frankfurt, focusing on M&A and due diligence.

He joined SHS in 1997 as a managing director and became a partner in 1998, going on to serve as Managing Partner. Over 27 years on the management board he was one of the driving forces in building SHS into a leading European healthcare investor, with particular responsibility for the firm's finance and fundraising functions. SHS itself was founded in 1993 and invests exclusively in the healthcare industry from its base in Tübingen, a recognized life-sciences hub in southern Germany.

In early 2025 SHS created a Supervisory Board as part of a leadership succession, and Leonhardt transitioned from the Board of Managing Partners onto it, continuing to support the firm as a Senior Partner. Concurrently, Lukas Maucher (SHS's CFO since 2022) was appointed Managing Partner responsible for finance and risk management. The remaining Board of Managing Partners comprises Sascha Alilovic, Uwe Steinbacher, and Manfred Ulmer-Weber.

Beyond his investing career, Leonhardt has served as an advisory/board member for multiple MedTech companies, structured numerous transactions in which SHS acted as lead investor, and has been active as a lecturer in finance (adult education) and as a member of an examination committee for certified accountants.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests only in the healthcare sector — MedTech, life sciences, diagnostics, digital health, and specialty pharma/suppliers — primarily across the DACH region.
  • Describes SHS's model as a "growth buyout" investor: combining buyouts of established, profitable healthcare companies with growth financing for scale-ups that are beginning to commercialize new technologies.
  • Backs companies needing capital for market rollout, regulatory approval (e.g., FDA), and clinical studies, as well as succession situations, international expansion, and minority stakes.
  • Targets deals with enterprise values up to ~€150m, assembling concentrated portfolios (~10–15 holdings) per fund.
  • Emphasizes hands-on value creation beyond capital: KOL and industry-expert networks, regulatory/reimbursement expertise, business development, and M&A support to drive exits via trade sale or IPO.
  • On the 2025 succession, Leonhardt stated: *"With Lukas Maucher we have appointed a highly qualified member of the management team from within the company. His appointment to the Board of Managing Partners ensures that our private equity firm continues to meet the demanding regulatory requirements for the next generations of funds."*
