Background
Hugh Sheppard is a Managing Director at SCF Partners, a Houston-founded (1989) private equity firm that builds and backs companies serving the global energy industry. Originally from Adelaide, Australia, Sheppard graduated with Honours from the University of Adelaide with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. He began his career as a reservoir and completions engineer at Santos, a leading Australian exploration and production company, where he planned and executed well integrity, well completion, and field development programs across Central Australia.
Sheppard earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, graduating in 2016, and joined SCF Partners directly from HBS that same year. He was initially based in SCF's Aberdeen, Scotland office (hence the UK phone number and prior Vice President title associated with that location), where he played a significant role in SCF's UK and international energy-services investments.
In August 2021, Sheppard relocated to Adelaide to strengthen SCF's presence in the Asia-Pacific region and to support the firm's energy-transition strategy. From Australia he focuses on deal sourcing and portfolio-company support across APAC, remotely supporting teams in Aberdeen and Singapore. He was promoted from Vice President to Managing Director in December 2024. Personally, he is married with two children and is a rugby enthusiast and coach.
Note on the source stub: the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" labels are inaccurate. Sheppard is a private equity investor at an institutional energy-focused buyout firm, not an angel or seed-stage investor.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in companies that provide products, equipment, and services to the global energy industry — SCF's long-standing niche since 1989.
- Pursues control and growth private equity: buyouts, platform roll-ups, and merging multiple portfolio companies into larger regional/global leaders (e.g., combining four companies to form Centurion Group).
- Increasingly oriented toward energy transition — SCF has stated interest in LNG, mining services, renewables, decarbonization, electrification, and water/utilities; roughly 11% of portfolio revenue is in decarbonization/renewables/transition and another ~8% in related markets, per SCF's 2024 review.
- Regional mandate: Sheppard's remit is Asia-Pacific, sourcing and supporting Australian and Singapore-based platforms and identifying new service/equipment investment opportunities in the region.
- Backs operationally strong, engineering-led businesses — consistent with SCF's model of pairing capital with deep energy-industry operating expertise; Sheppard's own engineering and reservoir background reinforces this technical diligence.
Notable Investments
- Centurion Group — SCF merged four portfolio companies in 2018 to create this energy services/rental group; Sheppard played a significant role.
- Score Group — UK-headquartered valve and energy-services company acquired by SCF; Sheppard supported the deal.
- Hydrasun — Aberdeen-based provider of fluid transfer, power, and integrity solutions; SCF acquisition Sheppard worked on.
- Gulf Energy → NESR — Supported the acquisition of Gulf Energy and its subsequent merger into National Energy Services Reunited (NESR).
- Callidus — Australian platform investment led by Sheppard (highlighted in SCF's 2024 activity).
- MPC Kinetic (MPK) — Australian platform advancing work on the Golden Plains Wind Farm; managed by Sheppard.
- Shelf Drilling / Shelf and Contract Resources — Additional Australian platforms Sheppard oversees.
