Background

Ian Bund is widely regarded as a founding figure of Michigan's venture capital industry. He earned a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney and an MBA from Harvard Business School, and has been active in venture capital investing since 1969. In 1976 he was recruited to Michigan by Herbert "Ted" Doan to run Midland-based Doan Associates, one of the first venture firms operating in the state. By his own account, for roughly 15 years he was "the only full-time venture capital professional in Michigan," and he formed what is described as the first institutionally backed venture capital firm in the state.

Over his career Bund has led or co-led roughly 13–14 funds and, through those partnerships and his own account, has played a role in building over 350 companies, executing more than 40 IPOs, and serving on the boards of more than 20 businesses. He co-founded Plymouth Growth Partners (also referred to as Plymouth Ventures / Plymouth Management Co.) in Ann Arbor, where he served as a partner and later as Senior Advisor / Senior Policy Advisor. The firm has since rebranded as Straylight Capital, where Bund is listed as a senior advisor; the current investing team is led by partners including Jeff Barry, Brook Critchfield, David Kerr, and Kevin Terrasi.

Bund has also been deeply involved in building Michigan's broader entrepreneurial ecosystem. Beginning in 1978 he worked with University of Michigan professor David Brophy (Director of the Office for the Study of Private Equity Finance) on the launch of the Michigan Growth Capital Symposium, which held its inaugural event in the late 1980s. He is affiliated with the University of Michigan's Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurship and has been a recognizable mentor and speaker in the regional VC community.

His standing in the field has been repeatedly recognized: in 2013 Crain's Detroit Business profiled him as "the dean of the state's venture capitalists," and in 2017 the Michigan Venture Capital Association honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award for his role in shaping Michigan's venture capital community.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in mid-continent (Midwest) B2B software and technology companies that already have proven business models, strong teams, and roughly $3M–$10M in revenue and are "ready to scale" — i.e., growth-stage rather than pure idea-stage bets.
  • Sector emphasis on B2B software, technology, financial services, healthcare, and industrial firms.
  • Believes demonstrated wins are what unlock a regional ecosystem: *"There's nothing like success to create the kind of proof statement that catches people's attention."*
  • As an individual/angel investor, has historically backed earlier-stage and seed-round technology and life-sciences companies, drawing on decades of operating-board experience.
  • Values disciplined growth and strong management teams over hype; described by peers as "tough and loyal," signaling a hands-on, board-level, governance-focused approach.
