Background
Ian Morley is one of the pioneers of the European hedge fund and alternative-investment industry. Trained as an economist — he holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the London School of Economics, where he was Vice President of the Students' Union — he has spent roughly four decades in finance. He began his career at commodity trader Phibro before moving into the futures markets at Shearson (a forerunner to Lehman Brothers) in the late 1970s. He later worked at Rudolf Wolff Fund Management, returned to Lehman in the 1990s to run its European multi-manager funds, and in 1995 joined AIB Govett as head of derivatives, managing one of the first unit trusts trading commodities and derivatives.
In 2000 he moved to Dawnay Day Olympia as chief executive of one of Europe's largest privately owned fund-of-funds, which was acquired by Olympia in 2006. In 1990 he founded and was elected the first Chairman of what became the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA), now the global trade body for the hedge fund industry. He has also served on the boards of the International Committee of the Managed Funds Association, the LME Index Committee, and the Council of AIMA, and has advised the Bank of England, the Central Bank of Ireland, the OECD and the EU on managed derivatives, markets and hedge fund regulation.
Today Morley chairs Wentworth Hall, his own family office, consulting and private-equity vehicle, and acts as a Senior Consultant to AllenbridgeEpic, an award-winning pensions and investment consultancy. Over the past 20+ years he has built, bought, sold and mentored numerous start-ups, and his current directorships span property, Asian lending, blockchain and cryptocurrency ventures. He is the author of *Morley's Laws of Business and Fund Management* and a frequent conference chairman and media commentator (BBC, Sky, CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg; The Times, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune). He has also lectured as an Industrial Fellow at Kingston University on its MA in Strategic Finance and is a member of Gray's Inn.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates primarily as a business angel and family-office principal, backing early-stage / seed companies and mentoring founders through growth phases, alongside allocating to alternative assets.
- Deep specialism in alternative investments — hedge funds and fund-of-funds — reflecting his career running some of Europe's earliest and largest fund-of-funds structures.
- Actively focused on blockchain and cryptocurrency as an evolution of family-office investing; he has chaired crypto multi-manager and digital-asset fund-of-funds vehicles (e.g., Atitlan; YRD Capital).
- Sector breadth beyond finance into healthcare and regenerative medicine, property, and specialist lending, mirroring his portfolio of chairmanships and directorships.
- Values operational involvement — he tends to take chairman / NED / senior-consultant roles, not passive stakes, bringing regulatory, capital-raising and industry-network value.
