Background
Ingrid Chiavacci is a finance and operations executive who spent most of her career as the Chief Financial Officer of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners (HWVP), the pioneering San Francisco venture firm founded in 1989 by Ann Winblad and John Hummer as the first VC firm to invest exclusively in software. She joined the firm in 2007 as Controller and rose to CFO, overseeing fund finance, accounting, administration, and operations. She held the CFO role through roughly 2021 and then continued as a Senior Financial Advisor to the firm before retiring from active service around 2024.
Before Hummer Winblad, Chiavacci was Controller at the PlumpJack Management Group in San Francisco, where she managed financial, administrative, and human-resources activities across a portfolio of retail and hospitality ventures. Earlier in her career she was a Senior Associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, delivering advisory services primarily to telecommunications, technology, and financial-services companies. In total she brings more than 20 years of experience across public accounting, private-equity/venture finance, and operational roles.
She earned a B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Colorado Boulder's Leeds School of Business. She is a member of the Financial Executives Alliance and the Private Equity CFO Organization, and has served on the CU Leeds School of Business Career Development Advisory Board.
Since stepping back from HWVP, Chiavacci has consulted as a Senior Financial Advisor in the private-equity/venture-capital industry (including work associated with Aspenwood Ventures) and has served as an Advisory Board Member at InvestX Camp since March 2021.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Chiavacci's role is as a fund CFO / finance leader, not a discretionary investor; investment decisions at HWVP are driven by the firm's general partners.
- HWVP's thesis, which frames her work: early-stage, category-defining enterprise software companies — historically the "first VC firm to invest only in software."
- Sector emphasis: cloud computing, data and analytics, AI/big data, application integration, and web security & privacy.
- The firm has raised focused early-stage funds (e.g., a ~$70M vehicle for early-stage enterprise software) and looks for "category-winning" software companies.
Notable Investments
- MuleSoft — enterprise integration platform; IPO'd (NYSE: MULE) and later acquired by Salesforce for ~$6.5B (2018).
- Sonatype — software supply-chain/DevSecOps company; acquired by Vista Equity Partners.
- Five9 — cloud contact-center software; public company (NASDAQ: FIVN).
- Aria Systems — cloud billing/monetization platform.
- Historic HWVP wins also include early software category leaders such as Napster and Net Perceptions from the firm's earlier funds.
