Background

Itschak Friedman is a veteran health-tech and enterprise-software operator turned investor. He co-founded STARLIMS, a global scientific informatics (laboratory information management systems / LIMS) software provider serving Fortune 500 companies and governments, where he served as President, CEO, and Chief Architect. He led STARLIMS through its growth until its acquisition by Abbott in 2010.

Following the acquisition, Friedman served as Divisional Vice President and General Manager of Abbott Informatics Solutions, where he helped develop Abbott's long-range informatics strategy. This combination of building a category-leading software company and running a division inside a large healthcare corporation gives him a distinctive operator perspective on both early product development and enterprise go-to-market.

Today, Friedman is a Venture Partner (and founding partner) at LionBird Ventures, an Israel/US digital health venture capital firm managing an approximately $85M fund. He leads LionBird's Advisory Councils and its "Advising Founders" team, coaching portfolio companies from technological roadmap and product ideation through their first sales and delivery. He has also served on company boards, including Genome Compiler and Bizzabo.

He holds a B.Sc. in Geology and Earth Sciences from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A, with check sizes of $1M–$2M (sweet spot ~$1.5M).
  • Sector concentration in Health IT, Digital Health, and Health & Hospital Services, consistent with LionBird's positioning as a digital health fund.
  • Brings a hands-on operator's value-add: he leads LionBird's advisory function, helping founders with technological roadmap, product strategy, first sales, and delivery/implementation — areas drawn directly from his STARLIMS and Abbott experience.
  • Favors founders building software for healthcare and enterprise customers where deep domain understanding and a clear path to first paying customers matter.
  • Geographic focus on the Israel–US corridor, pairing Israeli technical teams with US healthcare market access.

Notable Investments

  • STARLIMS — Co-founder/CEO/Chief Architect of the scientific informatics (LIMS) company; acquired by Abbott in 2010 (his foundational exit, not a VC investment but central to his record).
  • Genome Compiler — Synthetic biology / DNA design software company; served as a board member.
  • Bizzabo — Event-experience software platform; served as a board member.
  • LionBird portfolio (firm-level, which he advises): includes Fundbox (SMB fintech/credit), Ovia Health (women's and family health, acquired by Labcorp), and Droom (online automobile marketplace) among ~45 companies, with multiple acquisitions and unicorns.
