Background

Jack Howell is Co-President of Stonepeak, a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, and a member of all of Stonepeak’s investment committees. Stonepeak says he shares broad responsibilities across investing and the firm’s day-to-day business. In January 2024, he and Luke Taylor were promoted from Co-Chief Operating Officers to Co-Presidents, continuing oversight of Stonepeak’s global day-to-day activities.

Howell joined Stonepeak in 2015. Before Stonepeak, he covered the oil and gas sector at Davidson Kempner Capital Management from 2014 to 2015, worked at Denham Capital, an energy-focused private equity firm, from 2011 to 2014, and began his career as an analyst in Credit Suisse’s oil and gas investment banking group.

He received a Bachelor of Arts in Plan II Honors and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics through the Business Economics Program from the University of Texas at Austin, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Outside Stonepeak, he serves on the boards of King Ranch, Inc. and Texas Children’s Hospital and sits on the Board of Overseers at the Hoover Institution.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stonepeak’s stated approach is to make “strategic investments in defensive, hard-asset businesses globally” using thematic investing, sector relationships, and operational techniques.
  • Howell’s platform focuses on essential infrastructure: assets that power homes, connect communities, move goods and food, enable travel, and support digital connectivity.
  • Stonepeak looks for sectors with durable tailwinds and essential services, including digital infrastructure, energy and energy transition, transport and logistics, real estate, and infrastructure credit.
  • The firm emphasizes downside protection through underwriting, structuring, and operational expertise, and it seeks “off-the-run” transactions that can offer more attractive entry valuations.
  • In Stonepeak’s Opportunities Fund context, Howell said sourcing mid-market infrastructure investments requires “a nimble, creative approach to origination” and deep understanding of industry themes.
  • In a 2025 Bloomberg discussion, Howell highlighted AI and digital infrastructure, energy demand, energy transition, and supply-chain realignment as large capital needs that define the next infrastructure opportunity.
  • Stonepeak Credit targets transportation and logistics, energy and energy transition, digital infrastructure, and social infrastructure credit investments with high barriers to entry, visible recurring revenue, downside protection, and majority senior secured cash-yielding structures.
