Background

Jae S. Yoon is Chief Investment Officer of New York Life Investment Management (NYLIM) and Chairman of New York Life Investments Asia. As CIO he chairs the firm's Investment Governance Committee and oversees the investment performance of the strategies managed across NYLIM's boutiques and affiliate portfolio teams. He also leads the Multi-Asset Solutions (MAS) team, which handles portfolio management of MainStay and third-party multi-asset strategies, asset-allocation services, and economic analysis for New York Life. He joined New York Life in 2010 and was formally elevated to the newly created CIO role in 2015.

Before New York Life, Yoon was global Head of Quantitative Research, Analytics, and Risk Management at Western Asset Management. Earlier, he was at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, where he served as Head of Risk and Performance for the Pacific and European regions (based in Tokyo and London, respectively), and at J.P. Morgan Securities in Asia, where he was regional head of Risk Management Control for fixed income and equity derivatives trading. This risk-and-quant lineage informs his emphasis on diversification, covenant discipline, and downside management.

Yoon earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Master's in Operations Research from Cornell University, and has completed executive finance coursework at Harvard Business School. He is a CFA charterholder and holds FINRA Series 3 and 7 registrations. In November 2016 he received the Irving Kahn Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Society of Security Analysts (CFA Society New York).

The platform he oversees is one of the world's largest active asset managers: New York Life reported roughly $785 billion at the time it announced unifying its investment businesses in 2025, growing to about $807.7 billion in AUM as of December 31, 2025 under the unified New York Life Investment Management brand (effective January 1, 2026).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates as an institutional multi-boutique CIO, not a startup investor — allocating and overseeing capital across public and private markets (fixed income, credit, equities, multi-asset, real estate, private credit) rather than writing venture checks.
  • Strong emphasis on risk management and diversification, reflecting a career built in quantitative research and risk control: "In private credit you have to be extremely careful how you segregate, diversify."
  • Cautious on private credit and leveraged finance: warned in 2024 that "we're about to come to a reckoning moment," citing excessive competition, loosening covenants, declining recovery rates, and debt concentration.
  • Regime-shift view of markets: "The last 15 years should not be repeated in the next five to 10 years" — positioning for a higher-rate, lower-liquidity environment rather than a repeat of the post-2008 bull run.
  • Focus areas include multi-asset allocation, MainStay funds, ETF allocation strategies, and disciplined credit underwriting.

Notable Investments

  • MainStay multi-asset and asset-allocation funds — the mutual-fund complex his Multi-Asset Solutions team manages.
  • Suite of ETF allocation funds — launched by New York Life Investments in 2020, part of the MAS product build-out.
  • New York Life general account strategies — public and private fixed income and credit managed across NYLIM boutiques (e.g., MacKay Shields, where he previously served in a senior managing director / deputy-CIO capacity).
  • NYL Investments Asia platform — the Asia-focused business he chairs.
