Background
Jairam Sridharan is the Managing Director & CEO of Piramal Finance. Piramal Finance says he joined the company in 2020 as Managing Director for the Retail Lending business and became MD & CEO of the merged Piramal Enterprises/Piramal Finance entity after the 2025 merger. The company credits him with helping reshape Piramal Finance into a diversified, technology-led, retail-focused NBFC, expanding the retail book from approximately ₹5,300 crore to nearly ₹72,000 crore over four years, while growing the branch network from 14 to 517 and employees from 1,500 to more than 15,500.
Before Piramal Finance, Sridharan was Chief Financial Officer of Axis Bank and also held leadership roles including President - Retail Lending & Payments. Piramal Finance states that he led a sixfold expansion of Axis Bank’s retail book over five years and helped position Axis among India’s top five retail lenders.
Earlier in his career, he led “New to Credit” Card Acquisitions at Capital One Financial in the US Cards Business in Richmond, Virginia. He began at ICICI Bank, where he was part of the team that built the bank’s retail lending business and headed its Business Intelligence Unit.
Sridharan holds a B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Calcutta, where Piramal Finance says he received the Roll of Honour for academic excellence. His public recognitions include FE Pillar of the BFSI Industry in 2022, Institutional Investor’s Best CFO in 2019, and The Economic Times 40 Under 40 list in 2015.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Sridharan’s public investment posture is primarily corporate/operator-led rather than a disclosed personal angel-investor practice. I found no reliable public source confirming a personal seed-stage angel portfolio or personal check size.
- His stated business focus is lending-led financial inclusion in India. Piramal Finance’s partnership page quotes him: “We want to serve all lending needs of consumers and small businesses of Bharat, differentiating through product personalization & superior customer experience, enabled by a franchise that is ‘digital-at-the-core’.”
- He has emphasized underserved Indian markets. In a November 2025 Financial Express interview, he said Piramal Finance is “intentionally focused on underserved regions,” with growth centered on tier-2 and tier-3 India.
- Piramal Finance’s M&A/inorganic focus, as described by Sridharan, is on NBFC-like businesses in Bharat markets, especially microfinance, gold lending, affordable housing, and MSME credit.
- His operating thesis combines physical distribution with technology and AI. Piramal describes this as a “High Tech + High Touch” strategy, using cloud/AI capabilities alongside a large branch network.
- Risk discipline is a recurring theme: in April 2026, he told Financial Express that Piramal Finance had tightened underwriting and reduced high-risk exposure in affected sectors amid geopolitical uncertainty.
Notable Investments
- Fibe / EarlySalary: Fintech lender. Public sources identify Sridharan as a director/nominee director at Fibe; Financial Express reported Piramal Finance held a sub-10% stake, while another report cited a 10% stake and potential IPO-related value unlock.
- Shriram Life Insurance: Piramal Finance sold its stake in Shriram Life Insurance for ₹600 crore in Q4 FY26, according to Business Standard.
- Pramerica Life Insurance: TheOfficialBoard lists Sridharan as a director at Pramerica Life Insurance; Financial Express described Piramal’s Pramerica Life exposure as a joint venture with Prudential.
- DHFL / Piramal Finance retail scale-up: Piramal’s 2021 DHFL acquisition was a major platform event for the company’s retail-lending transformation; subsequent interviews credit the post-acquisition period with Piramal Finance’s pivot from wholesale-heavy lending toward an 80%+ retail-led book.
