Background

James Bagan is Frog Capital's first Operating Partner, having joined the London-based growth-equity firm in 2018 to work alongside co-founders Mike Reid and Steven Dunne. Rather than being a traditional deal partner, his mandate is operational: he supports portfolio-company CEOs on go-to-market (GTM) strategy, sales-team scaling, US and international expansion, VP-of-Sales recruitment, and building repeatable B2B "sales machines." At the time of his appointment, Frog framed the hire as a way to "take our Scale-Up CEO support to the next level," and Bagan said what impressed him was "the substance behind this concept of The CEO's VC."

Bagan has more than 30 years of professional experience running global sales teams and, as CEO and Chair, has led multiple technology businesses to successful exits. He worked in software sales for a south-London tech company later acquired by Experian, and held senior sales-leadership roles at QAS/Experian and Harte-Hanks. He subsequently served as Chief Executive at Language Line and at Occam, leading both to successful exits. Since 2004 he has worked exclusively with investor-backed technology companies.

In 2012 he founded his own advisory firm (Sales Forensics Ltd), which provides a sales due-diligence service to investors; by his own account that service has been used well over 100–150 times worldwide, and over roughly a 14-year span he has consulted on more than 50 businesses on behalf of around a dozen investment houses. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Sales Management and a PRINCE2-certified project manager, and he chairs several investor-backed technology businesses across Europe. His international sales experience spans the US, Australia, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates at Frog Capital, which provides growth capital of €5m–€20m to European software scale-ups with roughly €3m–€30m in annualised revenue that have achieved product-market fit.
  • Frog's investment themes are digital infrastructure and smart data, delivered together with operational support via its "Scale-Up Methodology."
  • Bagan's personal focus is operational value-add, not capital allocation — he says yes to helping companies where the growth bottleneck is go-to-market: sales-team structure, VP-Sales hiring, US/international expansion, and turning founder-led selling into a scalable B2B revenue engine.
  • His diligence lens comes from years of sales due diligence for investors — he assesses whether a company's sales operation can scale in a controlled, repeatable way before and after investment.
  • Frog positions itself as "The CEO's VC" — patient, hands-on support for scale-up CEOs — a philosophy Bagan cites as his reason for joining.

Notable Investments

  • Modulr — payments-as-a-service / digital payments infrastructure; a flagship Frog Capital portfolio company.
  • Clue Software — investigation and intelligence-management software; frequently cited Frog portfolio company.
  • WinningTemp — employee-engagement / people-analytics SaaS (Sweden).
  • Genasys — critical-communications / emergency-management software; Bagan has held a chair role.
  • Evotix (formerly SHE Software) — EHS/workplace-safety software; noted as an exit.
  • Caspar — technology scale-up within Frog's portfolio orbit.
  • Ryte and Filament / Syfter — technology businesses where Bagan has held chair positions.
  • Language Line and Occam — earlier businesses he led as Chief Executive, both taken to successful exits.
