Background

Jim Binch is a long-tenured operating executive who spent most of his career running and turning around industrial and manufacturing businesses. He holds a BS in Engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Early in his career he was an operating-group executive at Combustion Engineering and later founded a boutique merchant bank before moving into full-time operating leadership.

From 1992 to 2005 he was President and CEO of Memry Corporation, a publicly traded manufacturer of Nitinol (shape-memory alloy) components for the medical-device industry. He built the company from fewer than 10 employees to more than 375, acquired a division of Raychem Corp. and businesses in Belgium and Massachusetts, personally raised over $15 million in private equity, and grew the core shape-memory business roughly twentyfold, making Memry the largest independent maker of Nitinol medical components. He announced his retirement from Memry in December 2005.

In 2007 he joined Lincolnshire Management, Inc.—a New York private-equity firm founded in 1986 that acquires and operates small and mid-sized companies—as a Managing Director on the Operations Team, and now serves as a Senior Advisor. In that capacity he has functioned as a hands-on operator across the firm's portfolio, serving as interim CEO of Nursery Supplies, Inc. and Latite Roofing, and leading operational "renewal" programs (restructuring sales channels, manufacturing, procurement, project management, and pricing) at Desch Plantpak, True Temper Sports, Aerosim, and Wabash. He has held board seats at Nursery Supplies, Wabash, Latite, Fabbri, and Trans World Sign.

More recently he served as CEO of Q-Tran, a family-owned LED-lighting manufacturer in Milford, CT, and on January 25, 2024 he was appointed CEO of Lex Products, a manufacturer of rugged electrical power distribution and connectivity products—both consistent with his pattern of leading established manufacturing companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests and operates through Lincolnshire Management's control-buyout strategy rather than as a venture/seed angel; the firm partners with management to acquire established businesses.
  • Targets small/mid-sized companies with meaningful cash flow (~$5M–$50M) and clear organic or acquisition-driven growth opportunities.
  • Favored deal types: corporate divestitures, selling shareholders, and owner-operators seeking liquidity.
  • Value-creation approach is operational and hands-on: restructuring sales channels, manufacturing footprint, raw-materials/procurement, project management, and pricing systems—reflecting his own operating track record.
  • Sector affinity built on his career: industrial/precision manufacturing, medical components (Nitinol), building products, and specialty consumer/industrial goods.
