Background
James C. Bly, Jr. has spent more than 35 years advising the principal owners of family-controlled businesses and family offices on building larger, more valuable companies and on transitioning ownership from one generation to the next. A 1973 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, he began his career in 1974 as a management trainee at Connecticut General Life, later worked as a managing executive at Integrated Resources Equity Corporation (IREC) and as a representative in the family-business division of CIGNA Financial Services, and earned a Certificate in Financial Planning from The American College. He is a Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor (CM&AA) through the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors.
In 1982 he founded the professional-services firm that became Source Capital / Sources Companies, rebranded as Headwaters SC, LP (HWSC) in 2008 when it aligned with investment bank Headwaters MB. He led that firm as CEO for more than 25 years, advising hundreds of business-owning families. In 2004 he co-founded Business Growth Alliance, LLC (BGA), an international network of affiliated advisory firms serving founder-led and family-owned middle-market companies, and served as its Co-Chairman and CEO until 2017. He remains an owner of BGA and holds the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus.
In 2017, HWSC's Family Enterprise Business Services (FEBS) advisory division was acquired by Ernst & Young, LLP (EY), where Bly joined as an Executive/Managing Director and national practice leader of EY's Family Enterprise Business Services unit, based in Pittsburgh. HWSC's remaining family-office direct-investment division was rebranded FODIS (Family Office Direct Investment Services), where Bly is a founder, principal, and Chairman Emeritus. FODIS advises single-family offices, family business holding companies, and ultra-high-net-worth investors seeking direct investments into operating businesses, offering long-term, "patient" capital to family enterprises.
Bly has served on several boards and investment committees, including the High Companies investment committee (since 2011), the Huntley & Huntley, Inc. business advisory board (since 2016), and the C.H. Briggs Hardware advisory board (2006–2011). He is a member of the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors and the Association for Corporate Growth, a supporter of the PathNorth community, and recipient of the 2018 John C. Whitehead Award for Civility and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs founder-led and family-owned operating businesses in the middle and upper-middle market — his career-long specialty rather than technology venture bets.
- Emphasizes "long-term, patient capital" through FODIS: direct investments designed to help family businesses grow while preserving family control, rather than short-hold financial buyouts.
- Focuses on the classic family-enterprise problems he has advised on for 35+ years: organic and external growth, growth financing that maintains family control, generational/ownership transitions using parallel governance structures, and shareholder-liquidity planning.
- Works alongside single-family offices, family holding companies, and UHNW investors as co-investors and advisors, aligning capital with owners who want an involved, long-horizon partner.
- Values quality of ownership and management fit — his engagements come through advisory relationships and board/investment-committee roles rather than cold, high-volume deal flow.
Notable Investments
- High Companies — member of the family-business group's investment committee since 2011 (governance/capital-allocation role).
- Huntley & Huntley, Inc. — Pittsburgh-area energy/oil-and-gas family company; member of its business advisory board since 2016.
- C.H. Briggs (Hardware) Company — building-products distributor; served on its advisory board 2006–2011.
- FODIS direct-investment mandates — patient-capital investments into family-controlled operating businesses on behalf of family offices and UHNW investors (specific portfolio companies are not publicly disclosed).
- *(Note: BGA's public listings — e.g., Franklin Nova, The Utech Group, ArkMalibu, ValueDefined, Asher, yet2, Tenzing, Communica, Flow — are affiliated advisory member firms of the BGA network, not personal portfolio investments.)*
