James Cooper Abbott

Cooper Abbott is a career institutional asset-management executive, not an angel investor. He joined Raymond James in 2001 and rose through its asset-management arm, Eagle Asset Management, a Raymond James subsidiary. He became Executive Vice President and Co‑Chief Operating Officer (with Richard Rossi) effective February 1, 2012, as part of Raymond James' succession plan, and had served as Co‑COO and a director of Eagle since October 2009. He was later named President of Eagle Asset Management (per Bloomberg, from April 2016).

Abbott founded and built Carillon Tower Advisers, Raymond James' multi‑boutique, multi‑channel investment manager, into a firm overseeing roughly $64–75 billion in assets. As Chairman and President, he assembled a family of independently branded affiliate boutiques — Eagle Asset Management, ClariVest Asset Management, Cougar Global Investments, Reams Asset Management, Scout Investments, and Chartwell Investment Partners — spanning equity, fixed income, quantitative, and multi‑asset strategies. He held the Chairman & President role until February 2022.

In June 2022, Matthews International Capital Management (Matthews Asia), an independent, privately owned Asia‑focused investment specialist, announced Abbott as its Chief Executive Officer, succeeding William Hackett; he took the role effective June 30, 2022. He led Matthews Asia until April 7, 2025, when he departed and co‑founder Mark Headley returned as executive chairman.

Abbott earned a B.A. from Brown University (Phi Beta Kappa, with honors) and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a CFA charterholder, a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), a Certified Fraud Examiner, and holds the SASB FSA credential. As a Fulbright Fellow, he developed and directed a project to re‑engineer technology aid programs for cost and life‑cycle savings in the South Pacific. His earlier background includes private equity investing, project finance, and complex environmental projects.
