Background
James Currier is a five-time founder, prolific angel investor, and General Partner at NFX, the seed-stage venture firm he co-founded in 2015 alongside Pete Flint and Gigi Levy-Weiss. He holds a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School (he also attended Phillips Exeter Academy). Early in his career, Currier worked briefly in tech software before landing an associate role at Battery Ventures in Boston. During 1994-1995, he launched two of the first online venture capital community sites -- Capital Venture and VCNN (Venture Capital News Network) -- giving him an early window into the internet's network dynamics.
Currier is best known as the co-founder and CEO of Tickle, one of the internet's first successful user-generated content companies. Tickle grew to become the 18th largest website in the world with over 150 million registered users before being acquired by Monster in 2004 for $110 million. He went on to co-found three additional companies: Wonderhill (online video games, merged with Kabam in 2010 -- Kabam later sold for $800M), IronPearl (growth analytics SaaS, acquired by PayPal in 2013), and Jiff (enterprise healthcare software, raised $68M from Venrock, GE, and J&J, later merged with Castlight Health in 2017 -- NASDAQ: CSLT). Through these ventures, Currier pioneered many of the growth techniques now standard across Silicon Valley, including viral marketing, A/B testing, user-generated content models, and crowdsourcing.
Widely regarded as one of Silicon Valley's foremost experts on network effects and growth, Currier has also been an active angel investor in breakout companies including DoorDash, Lyft, and Patreon. He is deeply fascinated by psychology and language, and frequently writes and speaks on the psychology of startup growth, network effects typology, and founder decision-making. He is a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network and has been a featured speaker and thought leader at numerous industry events.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Currier and NFX invest exclusively in companies that benefit from network effects -- products and platforms that become more valuable to each user as the total number of users grows. Currier has noted that since 1994, 70% of all value created by technology companies worth over $1 billion came from businesses with network effects, yet only 20% of those businesses originally had network effects in their plans. This asymmetry is central to NFX's thesis.
Core focus areas include:
NFX invests at Pre-Seed and Seed stages, typically writing initial checks into 50-60 companies per fund. Approximately 40% of Fund IV capital is deployed in Israel, with the remainder primarily in the US.
