Background
James Espey is a veteran spirits executive and brand-builder with nearly 50 years in Scotch whisky and international drinks. He was born in Zambia and built early sales experience at Gilbeys South Africa before moving to London in 1977 to become marketing director at International Distillers & Vintners.
At IDV and later United Distillers, Espey worked on major spirits brands including Baileys, Malibu, Piat d’Or, the Classic Malts range and Johnnie Walker Blue Label. ScotchWhisky.com credits him with helping launch the Classic Malts and Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and with creating the Keepers of the Quaich in 1988, a Scotch whisky society recognizing service to the industry.
Espey later joined Chivas Regal & Glenlivet Group in 1992, where he pushed long-term brand and stock planning, including Chivas Regal 18-year-old and investment in distillery tourism. He was awarded an OBE for services to Scotch whisky in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
In 2008, Espey co-founded The Last Drop Distillers with Tom Jago. The company’s stated aim was to curate rare and remarkable spirits across categories, finding small parcels of exceptional whisky, cognac, port, bourbon and other aged spirits. The founding families later stepped back operationally, with daughters Beanie Espey and Rebecca Jago joining the business in 2014.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Espey’s investing and advisory value is concentrated in premium drinks brand creation, positioning, route-to-market and long-term category building.
- He has repeatedly emphasized judgment over market research alone: “Research is an aid to judgement, not a substitute for judgement.”
- His Last Drop philosophy favors rarity, provenance and product quality over scale; the firm describes its mission as “the quest is for the liquid and not the label.”
- He has shown a bias toward brands with long-term potential, arguing from his Chivas experience that whisky requires multi-decade planning rather than quarterly optimization.
- He appears most relevant to founders building spirits, luxury beverage, collectible alcohol or heritage-led consumer brands where narrative, liquid quality and distribution relationships matter.
