James Fleming

Jim Fleming is a Partner at Columbia Capital, an Alexandria, Virginia–based investment firm founded in 1989 that specializes in digital infrastructure, enterprise technology, and mobility. Fleming has been a partner at the firm since 1994 and is one of its most senior and longest-tenured investors; some third-party sources describe him in a managing-partner/CEO leadership capacity. He earned a B.A. from Stanford University.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Fleming has concentrated on communications and infrastructure — historically wireless, telecom, satellite, and media, and more recently data centers/colocation, cybersecurity, and mobility. Columbia Capital has backed more than 175–185 companies over its history and manages over $9 billion in fund commitments from institutional limited partners including sovereign wealth funds and pension funds. Fleming has sat on a long list of boards across the firm's portfolio.

His notable past board seats include XM Satellite Radio, The Tennis Channel (later acquired by Sinclair), Zayo (NYSE: ZAYO), NextNav (NASDAQ: NN), ExteNet Systems, ICG Communications, Nuvox Communications, Baja Broadband, Presidio, and Mobile Satellite Ventures/AB Spectrum, among others — many of which were acquired or merged (buyers over the years have included Windstream, Level 3, and Nextel). His current directorships include CENTRA, CPG, Driven, Everstream Analytics, Groundswell, High Band Holdings, Omnispace, round2media, Siden, Tract, Vela Infrastructure, and Vivacity Infrastructure Group.

In June 2026, Digital Realty announced an agreement to acquire Columbia Capital for approximately $485 million (largely in stock) to accelerate its Strategic Private Capital platform, with the deal expected to close in the second half of 2026 — a significant development for the firm where Fleming is a partner.
