Background
James Hipkiss joined Oxford Capital in late 2014. Before that he spent almost fourteen years in investment banking, working at Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and, latterly, Berenberg. During that period he took a roughly two-year break to co-found Quercus Associates, a China-focused investment advisory business backed by Lord Rothschild. He graduated with a first-class MA (Hons) in Modern History from the University of St Andrews.
At Oxford Capital he holds a Director-level role responsible for the team that manages the firm's relationships with wealth managers and financial advisers across the UK. He personally looks after Oxford Capital's account relationships in London, Northern Ireland and Scotland — i.e., he sits on the firm's investor-facing / distribution side, connecting professional intermediaries and their clients with Oxford Capital's early-stage technology and EIS products. He has represented the firm publicly at industry events, including Intelligent Partnership's London BPR Showcase for Advisers & Wealth Managers, where he discussed Oxford Capital's business and the configurability of its estate-planning (BPR) and EIS investment offerings.
Oxford Capital itself was founded in 1999 and is based in Oxford, one of the world's leading knowledge and research clusters. Over roughly 25 years the firm has invested more than £500m into 100+ companies, positioning itself as an experienced technology venture investor and a long-standing champion of the UK's Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), which offers investors reliefs such as 30% income-tax relief on qualifying early-stage investments.
(Note: A different individual named James Hipkiss is Co-Head of Equities at Peel Hunt LLP; that person is not the subject of this profile and should not be conflated with the Oxford Capital director reached at [hidden])
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Oxford Capital's institutional/EIS vehicles, not as a solo angel; the firm targets early-stage UK technology companies from pre-seed/seed through Series A, with follow-on capital reserved for winners as they hit milestones.
- Check sizes are firm-level, in the region of $1m–$5m per company depending on stage and potential; the firm emphasizes disciplined "portfolio construction" (multiple positions) over single large bets.
- Sector focus: fintech, health tech, cybersecurity, AI/ML, insurtech, legaltech, proptech and clean-energy / deep-tech software.
- The firm backs two archetypes it describes as "high potential" — companies that "have developed a ground-breaking product or IP that could disrupt the market" — and "early growth" — companies that "have launched their product and achieved early success." Companies typically have finished product development, early revenues, valuable IP, and evidence of product-market fit.
- Leverages the Oxford / UK research-cluster network and the tax advantages of EIS as a core part of the pitch to the wealth-manager and adviser channel that James serves.
- Reported (as of October 2022) a 7.0x multiple on invested capital over seven years, including deep-tech exits.
