Background
James Huang is a biotech industry veteran with over 30 years of experience as an operator and investor. He founded Panacea Venture (founded 2017) to invest in globally innovative early- and growth-stage healthcare and life sciences companies. Before Panacea, he was Managing Partner of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) China, which he joined in 2011 to build out and lead the firm's life sciences practice, focusing on innovation around China's growing healthcare markets. Prior to KPCB, he was a Managing Partner at Vivo Ventures (now Vivo Capital), a venture firm specializing in life sciences investments, which he joined in 2007.
His career began on the operating side of pharma and biotech. Immediately before joining Vivo, he served as President of Anesiva, a biopharmaceutical company focused on pain-management treatments. Over his career he also held senior roles in business development, sales, marketing, and R&D with Tularik Inc. (acquired by Amgen), GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and ALZA Corp. (acquired by Johnson & Johnson).
Huang is a prolific company builder as well as an investor. He founded and/or financed several notable life sciences companies, including GenScript, Legend Biotech, and Zai Lab, and is credited with helping grow GenScript/Legend Biotech from a small US venture-backed company into a revenue-generating business with a multi-billion-dollar valuation listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. He frequently takes active governance roles, serving as a director (and in some cases chairman or CEO) of portfolio companies and special-purpose vehicles.
He earned an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in early and growth-stage healthcare and life sciences companies globally, with primary activity at Seed and Series B; Panacea manages multiple funds and has backed 40+ companies.
- Backs disruptive innovation and supports entrepreneurs building companies "that will transform the lives of patients around the world" (firm bio).
- On going earlier to escape high valuations: *"You not only need to invest at earlier stages, like we are now going to university professors and researchers, but you also have to truly focus on innovation."*
- On selectivity by therapeutic area: *"Here in China, there is perhaps over-investment in the oncology area, while some other therapeutic areas are maybe under-invested… It is more important to invest in good quality and innovative companies."*
- On returns and exits: *"When our companies reach exits, the return is usually very good, sometimes reaching returns of ten-times our original investment,"* adding that focusing on innovation creates *"a lot of opportunities to be acquired."*
- Strong US–China cross-border angle, leveraging his operating background to build and scale companies across both markets.
