Background

James "Jim" Mitchel is a Partner at Harvest Partners, LP, a New York–based private equity firm founded in 1981 that pursues control investments in middle-market companies. He joined the firm in 2009 and is a member of the private equity investment team focused on the Business Services & Industrials vertical, with particular experience in industrial services, distribution, and business services.

Before Harvest, Mitchel was an Analyst at Moelis & Company, where he worked on M&A and restructuring assignments across a range of industries. Earlier in his career he was an Analyst at Jefferies & Company. He holds a B.S. in Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mitchel was promoted to Partner on February 24, 2020, in a class of promotions that also elevated Michael Greenman to Partner. Over his tenure he has taken active board roles across Harvest's industrials and services portfolio. He currently serves (or has served) on the boards of Fortis Solutions Group and Insight Global, and previously on the boards of FCX Performance, TruckPro, Lazer Logistics/Lazer Spot, and APC Automotive Technologies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Harvest Partners' control private-equity strategy — majority/control positions in established middle-market companies, not early-stage or minority venture bets.
  • Concentrates on the Business Services & Industrials vertical: industrial services, distribution, and business services.
  • Firm strategy (per Harvest) leverages 40+ years of experience "financing organic and acquisition-oriented growth" — i.e., backing profitable companies and scaling them through operational growth plus add-on M&A ("buy-and-build").
  • Targets companies with durable cash flows and clear consolidation/roll-up potential, reflected in his board work with distribution and services platforms (e.g., FCX Performance, TruckPro).

Notable Investments

  • Fortis Solutions Group — packaging/label manufacturer; current board representation.
  • Insight Global — national staffing and professional-services firm; current board representation.
  • FCX Performance — industrial process-flow control products distributor; Harvest agreed to sell FCX to Applied Industrial Technologies in 2018.
  • TruckPro — heavy-duty truck and trailer parts distributor; prior board representation.
  • Lazer Logistics / Lazer Spot — outsourced yard-management and spotting services provider; prior board representation.
  • APC Automotive Technologies — automotive undercar/emissions parts supplier; prior board representation.
