Background
James Murdoch (b. December 13, 1972, London) is the younger son of media magnate Rupert Murdoch. He attended Horace Mann School in New York and studied film and history at Harvard University, where he was a member of the Harvard Lampoon, but left in 1995 without graduating to co-found the hip-hop label Rawkus Records. He joined the family business, News Corporation, in 1996, becoming chairman of Festival Records and, in 2000, chairman and CEO of Star Television, the company's Asian satellite service — an early formative experience that shaped his later interest in the Indian market.
Over the following two decades he rose through the Murdoch media empire: CEO of BSkyB (2003), executive chairman of News International, and later chairman of Sky. He was forced to resign the BSkyB chairmanship in 2012 amid the UK phone-hacking scandal. He served as CEO of 21st Century Fox from mid-2015 until its roughly $71 billion sale to Disney in early 2019. In 2020 he resigned from the board of News Corp, citing disagreements over editorial content — a public break with his father's conservative media operations.
In 2019 Murdoch founded Lupa Systems, a New York–headquartered private holding company, funded in significant part by the estimated ~$2 billion in proceeds he received from the Disney transaction. Lupa is designed as a long-horizon vehicle to build a portfolio of media and technology companies, and by 2025 had reportedly made on the order of 30 investments across media, technology and other sectors. Murdoch has also been an independent director of Tesla since July 2017 and previously sat on the boards of Sotheby's and GlaxoSmithKline.
Alongside his investing, Murdoch and his wife Kathryn run the Quadrivium Foundation, a philanthropic vehicle focused heavily on climate change, ocean health, and strengthening democracy — including catalytic climate-finance commitments (such as an anchor role in a BlackRock climate-finance fund) that overlap with his investment interests.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Lupa Systems as a private holding company ("a private holding company headquartered in New York"), taking a patient, long-term, often controlling-stake approach rather than a traditional fund's fixed-term model.
- Concentrates on media, technology and mission-driven / culture-defining businesses — content, journalism, festivals, art, and emerging consumer-tech platforms.
- Willing to write early/seed angel checks in frontier tech (e.g., AI-driven virtual artists) while also pursuing large control acquisitions of established media brands.
- Strong India and South/Southeast Asia conviction, pursued via Bodhi Tree Systems, his joint platform with Uday Shankar backed by up to $1.5B from the Qatar Investment Authority, targeting media and consumer-technology companies.
- Aligns capital with climate and democracy themes through the Quadrivium Foundation and catalytic climate finance, reflecting a values-driven filter distinct from his family's traditional media positioning.
