James Niedel

James (Jim) Niedel is a physician-scientist turned venture investor and a co-founder of New Leaf Venture Partners, a healthcare-focused venture capital firm spun out of the Sprout Group (the venture arm of Credit Suisse First Boston) in 2005. He founded the firm alongside Philippe Chambon, Jeani Delagardelle, Ronald Hunt, and Vijay Lathi, and the team focuses on life-science and healthcare-technology companies. He moved into the venture industry in 2002 as a venture partner at Sprout before the healthcare team established New Leaf. The firm's public team page currently lists him in an Advisor capacity, reflecting a transition from full-time Managing Director.

Before venture capital, Niedel held one of the most senior R&D roles in the global pharmaceutical industry. From 1995 to 2001 he served on the board of directors of Glaxo Wellcome plc, with responsibility for Global Research & Development, Information Technology, and Product Strategy, and he served as Chief Science and Technology Officer for the merged GlaxoSmithKline. Earlier, from 1988 to 1995, he was Vice President of Research and then Senior Vice President of Research & Development for Glaxo's U.S. subsidiary.

Niedel began his career in academic medicine. He was Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Duke University Medical School, where he had earlier completed an internal-medicine residency and a hematology-oncology fellowship. He earned both his M.D. and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Miami, was named a Searle Scholar, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).

This combination — bench science, large-pharma R&D leadership, and venture investing — gives Niedel an unusually deep operating perspective on drug development, which he has applied to board seats at portfolio companies such as Chimerix and Tioga Pharmaceuticals.
