Background

James K. Outland co-founded New Capital Partners in Birmingham, Alabama around 2000–2001 alongside partner Jim Little, raising a dedicated pool of capital in the wake of the dot-com bust. He brings more than 30 years of private equity, mergers-and-acquisitions, and business-development leadership experience across both entrepreneurial ventures and established corporations. Prior to founding NCP, Outland held key roles in the healthcare industry, including serving as an officer of UnitedHealth Group following its acquisition of Complete Health Services — experience that shaped NCP's deep healthcare-services orientation.

Outland has taken hands-on operating roles with portfolio companies, including serving as CEO of Senior Whole Health during its first year. He has sat on the boards of numerous NCP investments — Teladoc (NYSE: TDOC), Awarix (sold to McKesson), Senior Whole Health (sold to TA Associates), REPAY, P&R Dental, Prism Pointe Technologies, Volly, Fident Health, Medsurant Health, and Healthfuse, among others. Today he serves as Chairman of the Board of ACES Quality Management, Precision Business, and DotCom Therapy, and sits on the board of Wakefield & Associates (formerly CollectRx).

He is active in the Birmingham civic community, having previously served on the board of UAB Medicine and as Chairman of the Board of the Birmingham Museum of Art. He currently serves on the board of the UAB Health Services Foundation and as Chairman of the Board of Birmingham Legion FC, a professional soccer club in Birmingham.

Outland holds a BA in Political Science and a BFA in Advertising, both from Southern Methodist University.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Lead, don't follow: In his own words, NCP's founding principles were — *"We would lead our own investments and not follow others; we would do our own diligence and not rely on third parties; we would invest in businesses we knew and could understand; and we would be actively involved and not just board members."*
  • Operators, not passive capital: NCP leverages its partners' "operating backgrounds to help our companies," taking active roles (board chairmanships, interim leadership) rather than serving as passive investors.
  • Sector concentration in what they know: Healthcare services and technology (telehealth, senior/dual-eligible care, pharmacy benefits, dental, revenue-cycle), plus financial technology/payments and business services.
  • Established, profitable companies: Focus on growth equity and small buyouts — companies with revenue above ~$5M and EBITDA of roughly $3M–$15M — not early-stage seed bets.
  • Southeast + Texas geography: Primary hunting ground is the Southeastern U.S. and Texas, reflecting the firm's Birmingham and Dallas footprint.
  • Long-term value creation: Outland says the firm views *"building New Capital Partners the same way we viewed building great companies"* — partnering with quality management teams over the long run.
