Background

Jim Petras is a Managing Director of Early Stage Partners, a Cleveland-based venture capital firm he has helped lead since its inception in 2001. ESP was founded on the thesis that the Midwest could produce a meaningful number of attractive technology companies, and it grew into what it describes as the largest and most active early-stage venture firm in Ohio, with roughly $99 million under management across two funds. Petras has also been Managing Director of Capital One Partners — the management entity behind ESP — since 1993.

Before building ESP, Petras spent decades in institutional venture and corporate finance. In 1988 he formed Cleveland-based Wolfensohn Ventures, L.P., a $50 million middle-market equity fund that he sourced, structured, and managed, backed notably by Australian media billionaire Kerry Packer and former World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn. Earlier in his career he founded and staffed a venture unit in Cleveland for Citicorp, where he also ran a multi-state region of the firm's leveraged lending business, overseeing a loan portfolio in excess of $1.2 billion and a team of more than 100 professionals.

Petras has been an active board member across ESP's and his prior funds' portfolios, with director and advisory roles reported at companies including Arisdyne Systems, Blue Spark Technologies, Thin Battery Technologies, Simbionix, LineStream Technologies, AM Design Group, Five Star Technologies, Excera, OPTEM, and EcoSmart — reflecting a hands-on, operationally engaged style typical of Midwest early-stage investing.

He earned a B.A. from Oberlin College in 1974 and both an M.A. and an M.B.A. (Finance) from the University of Michigan in 1978.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Seed and early-stage venture, the segment where ESP positions itself as Ohio's most active investor.
  • Sectors: Healthcare/medical technologies, information technology, advanced manufacturing, and industrial technologies — areas that play to Midwest engineering, clinical, and manufacturing strengths.
  • Geography: A deliberate Midwest focus, built on the conviction that overlooked regional technology companies can produce outsized outcomes (e.g., the firm's role in TOA Technologies, "the largest ever exit for an Ohio-based software company").
  • Style: Capital plus active board-level involvement — ESP frames itself as providing "capital, advice, and connections," and Petras's long list of board seats reflects a lead/co-lead, governance-engaged posture rather than passive checks.
  • Note on check size: ESP has not publicly disclosed a standard check size; given two funds totaling ~$99M and a board-seat model, investments are consistent with institutional seed/Series A rounds rather than small angel tickets. (Treat specific dollar figures as unverified.)

Notable Investments

  • HistoSonics — Histotripsy (sound-wave tumor destruction) platform; FDA-cleared Edison system (Oct 2023); raised $102M in 2024 and announced a management-led majority acquisition by a K5 Global–led syndicate in August 2025 valuing the company at ~$2.25 billion.
  • TOA Technologies — Field-service management software; sold to Oracle in 2014, cited by ESP as the largest-ever exit for an Ohio software company and part of a ~$750M combined portfolio-exit year.
  • OnShift — Workforce management software for senior care; raised an $18M Series D (2016) and took a strategic equity investment led by Clearlake Capital in 2018, with ESP among prior investors.
  • SeaStar Medical — Medical device company (acute kidney injury / organ support); went public on NASDAQ in October 2022.
  • Simbionix — Medical simulation and surgical training systems; acquired by 3D Systems.
  • Blue Spark Technologies — Thin, flexible printed batteries and body-temperature monitoring patches; a reported ESP portfolio acquisition.
  • Folio Photonics — Advanced optical/data-storage materials, a Midwest deep-tech holding.
  • Others: Arisdyne Systems, Ovation Polymers, Intelligent Clearing Network, LineStream Technologies, Thin Battery Technologies — spanning industrial, materials, and IT.
