Background
James Todaro is a medical doctor turned full-time crypto investor. He graduated with honors from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and is a licensed physician in the United States. Before crypto, he gained technology and industry experience through work associated with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and as a director for a medical device company. He notably left surgical residency shortly before completing it to pursue cryptocurrency investing full-time after his early positions delivered outsized returns.
Todaro was first introduced to Bitcoin in 2012 and began buying heavily during the 2014–2015 bear market. In April 2016 he and his brother-in-law Ryan Cody built an early altcoin basket dubbed the "T&C Alt 20 Index," concentrating roughly 20 tokens they believed were positioned for explosive growth. He and his partners report cumulative gains well into the thousands of percent from these early, contrarian positions — the track record that led them to formalize a fund.
In March 2018 he co-founded Blocktown Capital, a digital-asset fund focused exclusively on blockchain ventures, digital currencies, and application tokens. Blocktown describes a multidisciplinary approach combining fundamental analysis, momentum strategies, and statistical arbitrage to take medium- to long-term positions. Todaro is also the co-founder and CEO of MedX Protocol, a blockchain project at the intersection of his medical and crypto backgrounds. He is a frequent conference speaker (e.g., BLOCKCON) and podcast guest, and became widely known during 2020 for public commentary outside of crypto as well.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests exclusively in blockchain ventures, digital currencies, and application/utility tokens — a crypto-native, thesis-driven mandate rather than generalist tech.
- Contrarian, cycle-aware entry: Blocktown's stated philosophy is that "the bear markets can be as exciting as the bull markets," treating downturns as strategic accumulation windows and distinguishing themselves from investors who pile in only during euphoric rallies.
- Method: blends fundamental analysis, momentum, and statistical arbitrage to hold medium- to long-term positions.
- DeFi conviction: Todaro has publicly argued Ethereum could reach a ~$1 trillion market cap (implying a price target he pegged around $9,000) driven by the growth of decentralized finance — a signal of where he sees durable value accruing.
- As an angel/seed backer, he leans toward early-stage token and protocol projects aligned with these theses.
Notable Investments
- MedX Protocol — Co-founder and CEO; blockchain project applying crypto to the medical/healthcare domain.
- Bitcoin — Core long-held position since 2012, accumulated aggressively during 2014–2015.
- "T&C Alt 20" altcoin basket (2016) — Early diversified altcoin index he co-created, credited with the fund's outsized early returns.
- Ethereum / DeFi tokens — Publicly stated large-cap and DeFi positioning consistent with his Ethereum/DeFi thesis.
