Background

James Whittington is a UK private equity investor who spent roughly five years at CBPE Capital LLP, a London-based mid-market private equity firm, joining in 2016 and rising to Investment Director. At CBPE he worked on control and growth investments in the firm's core business-services and financial-services segments. He earlier trained as a chartered accountant at KPMG and then worked in UK Investment Banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofAML), advising on transactions across a range of sectors before moving into principal investing.

He was educated at the University of Cambridge, holding a degree in Classics with Management Studies, and is a qualified accountant.

After CBPE, Whittington moved into growth equity at General Atlantic in London, and in 2025 joined Bridgepoint as a Director within its London operation, where he is a member of the firm's Technology sector team. His career therefore spans professional-services advisory (KPMG), investment banking (BofAML), mid-market buyouts (CBPE), and growth equity (General Atlantic, Bridgepoint).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the mid-market private equity / growth-equity level — buyouts and significant growth stakes, not angel or seed cheques.
  • Sector emphasis on business services, financial and professional services, and increasingly technology (his current focus at Bridgepoint).
  • Backs established, cash-generative companies with expansion plans, typically partnering with existing management teams (as in the Centralis investment).
  • Brings an accountant's/banker's diligence lens (KPMG + BofAML background) to financial structuring and value creation.
  • Takes an active ownership role, joining portfolio company boards post-investment.

Notable Investments

  • Centralis Group (Luxembourg-headquartered corporate-services provider — incorporation, corporate secretarial, accounting, tax compliance, payroll/HR, treasury and debt administration; ~150 staff across nine countries): CBPE investment announced October 2019, led by Ian Moore and James Whittington to support the group's expansion; both joined the Centralis board. Terms undisclosed.
  • Modulr (UK payments / embedded-finance fintech): associated with Whittington in a non-executive/board capacity via his growth-equity work.
