James Wise

James Wise is a Partner at Balderton Capital, a European venture firm focused on technology companies. Balderton's own profile says he joined the firm in 2013 and became a Partner in 2016; his personal site says he has spent more than a decade investing in and supporting UK and European technology companies.

Before Balderton, Wise helped launch and run one of the UK's first social venture funds. He has also worked with entrepreneurs and businesses in Europe and Africa and worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company. Public biographies also note that he holds an MA from the University of Oxford.

Wise is active beyond venture investing. He is the author of *Start-Up Century*, published by Bloomsbury Business, and has written or contributed to outlets including The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, and the BBC. He has been a member of the UK Government's Industrial Development Advisory Board, a trustee of Demos, and in 2025 was appointed inaugural Chair of the UK Government's Sovereign AI Unit, described on his site as a £500M fund and AI-solutions group.
