Background

Jared Fogel is a Vice President at Metalmark Capital, a New York–based private equity firm he joined in 2020. Before Metalmark, he worked in investment banking as an analyst in the Healthcare Group at Jefferies and in the Consumer & Retail Group at Wells Fargo — giving him sector exposure across two of the areas Metalmark actively invests in. He holds a B.S. from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia.

Metalmark Capital traces its lineage to Morgan Stanley Capital Partners, founded in 1985, and became an independent firm in 2004 when its principals spun it out of Morgan Stanley (Citigroup Alternative Investments later took a stake in 2007). Over its history the firm has invested billions of dollars of equity across more than 100 companies, positioning itself as a long-term partner to founders and management teams in the middle market. It is led by Chairman and CEO Howard Hoffen, with Kenneth Clifford as partner and CFO.

As a VP, Fogel sits in the deal-team ranks — sourcing, evaluating, executing, and helping manage growth-equity and buyout investments in founder-owned businesses rather than making personal angel investments. He has also appeared publicly as a speaker at the Uncorrelated Alts conference, which lists him under the Metalmark Capital banner.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Metalmark's institutional funds, not personal angel capital — expect growth-equity and control/buyout structures, not seed notes or SAFEs.
  • Focus on founder-owned, middle-market companies where the firm can provide "capital and strategic support to business owners and executives" to help them "launch, build and grow their companies" (Metalmark's stated positioning).
  • Firm-level sector emphasis includes healthcare, energy and energy transition, consumer & retail, industrials/logistics, and financial services; Fogel's personal banking background (healthcare at Jefferies, consumer & retail at Wells Fargo) aligns most closely with healthcare and consumer.
  • Geographic focus is North America, run out of New York.
  • Values proven, revenue-generating businesses with real management teams — consistent with a middle-market PE mandate rather than pre-product startups.

Notable Investments

  • Individual deal attributions for Jared Fogel are not publicly disclosed — Metalmark does not publish per-VP board seats or deal credits, and no public source ties specific portfolio companies to him personally.
  • At the firm level, Metalmark has deployed billions across 100+ companies since 1985 in healthcare, energy, consumer/retail, industrials, and financial services. (A founder should ask Fogel directly which current portfolio companies he works on rather than rely on secondhand attribution.)
