Background
Jared Friedman is a Group Partner and Managing Director for Software at Y Combinator. He came to venture and the accelerator world as a founder himself: he co-founded Scribd — "the world's online library" — which was funded by Y Combinator in its early 2006 batch and grew into one of the top ~100 sites on the web. Friedman served as Scribd's Chief Technology Officer for roughly a decade (circa 2005–2015). He studied computer science at Harvard, where by his own account he "dropped out the year after Mark Zuckerberg," and earlier worked at a pioneering AI company before starting Scribd.
Before formally joining YC, Friedman was already a prolific angel, investing in more than 30 Y Combinator companies. He joined Y Combinator as a full-time partner in October 2015 (bringing YC to 16 full-time partners at the time) and has since become one of its most senior investors, now leading the software group.
At YC, Friedman is closely associated with pushing the accelerator further into "hard tech" and biotech — arguing that some of YC's most impactful companies are those building difficult things in the real world, not just software. He is a frequent public voice on this thesis through YC essays, talks (e.g., "Advice for Hard-tech and Biotech Founders"), and podcast appearances on AI and hard tech in healthcare. YC materials note the companies he has worked with are worth a combined ~$103 billion, and that he has advised 20+ YC unicorns.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs companies at the earliest stage (pre-seed/seed) through YC's standard deal (~$150K), betting on technical founders over polished pitches.
- Strong, explicit interest in hard tech and biotech: he argues that "most people know YC for funding software companies, but some of their most successful companies are the ones doing incredible things in the real world."
- Deep focus on AI and healthcare/biotech, where he emphasizes technical founders tackling genuinely difficult problems, and on academic spinouts commercializing scientific research.
- Also invests across his founder-native domains — media/content, marketplaces, social, education, and e-commerce (Scribd DNA).
- Looks for founders who understand the "true origins" of a startup — solving a real problem they're uniquely positioned to attack — over trend-chasing.
