Background

Jason Scott is a co-founder and Board of Directors member of Encourage Capital, a New York–based investment firm that seeks to make profitable investments that solve critical social and environmental problems. Encourage Capital was formed through the combination of Wolfensohn Fund Management, LP and EKO Asset Management Partners, LLC, the latter of which Scott co-founded. He also serves on the Investment Committee of the EKO Green Carbon Fund. Encourage Capital is known for research-driven "blueprints" for impact investing, including its widely cited *Investing for Sustainable Global Fisheries* work.

Before EKO, Scott was a founding Director and investment analyst at Generation Investment Management, the sustainability-focused asset manager co-founded by David Blood and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Jr. From roughly 1999 to 2004 he worked with the Acumen Fund, the Flatiron Future Fund/Foundation, and New Philanthropy Capital. Earlier in his career (1996–1999) he was president of a New York City–based software company, and before that he helped found and build Public Allies, a national-service nonprofit focused on youth leadership development.

Today Scott's activities span several organizations. He is a Partner and Entrepreneur in Residence at Spring Lane Capital, a private equity firm investing in sustainable and renewable infrastructure, and has served as a Senior Advisor to Renewable Resource Group, an asset manager focused on sustainable agriculture, water, renewables, and natural resources. He co-founded and co-chairs the CREO Syndicate, a nonprofit network that supports family offices in catalyzing large-scale investment into climate and sustainability solutions. He is also active in education, teaching "Investing in Climate Solutions" as an Executive/Executive-in-Residence at Duke University's Economics Department, and he has served as a judge for the MacArthur Foundation's 100&Change competition and as a speaker at the Milken Institute Global Conference.

Scott graduated cum laude from Duke University and earned an M.B.A. with honors jointly from Columbia Business School and London Business School.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests behind a core conviction that private capital can earn returns *while* solving environmental and social problems — the founding premise of Encourage Capital ("a new kind of investment firm that seeks to make profitable investments that solve critical social and environmental issues").
  • Concentrates on climate and sustainability themes: clean energy, sustainable and renewable infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, water resources, forestry/carbon, and sustainable fisheries and ocean health.
  • Works across the capital stack — from seed and early-stage company backing to growth private equity, fund strategies (e.g., the EKO Green Carbon Fund), and infrastructure/project finance at Spring Lane Capital.
  • Through the CREO Syndicate, aggregates and mobilizes family-office capital to invest "at scale" into climate solutions, favoring collaborative, network-driven deployment.
  • Emphasizes rigorous, thesis-driven diligence: Encourage Capital is known for publishing detailed investment "blueprints" (such as its global fisheries reports) that map out how capital can be deployed profitably in a given environmental sector.

Notable Investments

  • EKO Asset Management Partners — Co-founded this environmental markets investment firm; it later merged with Wolfensohn Fund Management to create Encourage Capital.
  • EKO / Encourage Capital Green Carbon Fund — A natural-resources and forest-carbon fund on whose Investment Committee Scott sits.
  • Generation Investment Management — Founding Director/analyst at the sustainability-focused asset manager (David Blood and Al Gore), an early platform-building role rather than an angel check.
  • Sustainable Global Fisheries strategies — Encourage Capital's fisheries "blueprint" work translating conservation goals into investable strategies.
  • Spring Lane Capital — Partner in a firm deploying "sustainability-as-a-service" project capital into distributed sustainable and renewable infrastructure.
  • CREO Syndicate portfolio activity — Co-chairs a family-office network channeling investment into climate and sustainability solutions across venture, growth, and infrastructure.
