Background

Jason Werner is a CFA charterholder with more than 25 years of financial-services experience focused on the community-banking sector, working across both investment banking and equity research. He earned a B.B.A. in Finance and Business Economics from the University of Notre Dame. Earlier in his career he held equity-research roles at Howe Barnes Hoefer & Arnett, Tucker Anthony, and Rodman & Renshaw — all firms with meaningful financial-institutions coverage.

He was a Vice President at FIG Partners LLC, an Atlanta-based boutique investment bank and research firm specializing in community banks. At the time it was acquired, FIG covered roughly 125 small and mid-size banks and made markets in 800-plus community-bank stocks, and it was one of the most active advisors in community-bank M&A (21 deals worth more than $3.7 billion in the year before the acquisition).

When Janney Montgomery Scott acquired FIG Partners (announced March 2019, closed April 30, 2019), Werner and the FIG team joined Janney's Financial Institutions Group, where he served as Director of Investment Banking. Over the following years the group continued as a leading community-bank M&A and capital-markets franchise, executing hundreds of transactions and providing research coverage for 140+ publicly traded depository and insurance companies.

In late 2025, Janney's private-equity owner (KKR) decided to exit institutional capital markets and refocus on wealth management. As part of that wind-down, the depository/insurance investment banking, equity research, and institutional equity sales businesses — the group Werner worked in — were sold to Brean Capital, a deal that closed February 2, 2026, moving roughly 50 capital-markets professionals (across Atlanta, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, and San Francisco) to Brean. His current employer as of 2026 is most likely Brean Capital, though this profile cannot individually confirm his post-close title.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Not a startup investor. Werner is a sell-side / advisory banker and analyst. His "focus" is advising and covering community banks and depository/insurance institutions, not writing angel or seed checks into technology startups.
  • Sector specialization: deep, long-tenured concentration in community banks — the core franchise of FIG Partners and the Janney/Brean Financial Institutions Group.
  • Activities: bank M&A advisory, capital raising (equity/subordinated debt offerings), and equity research on publicly traded banks.
  • What "yes" looks like in his world: engaging a community bank (or its board) as a client for a merger, sale, acquisition, or capital raise — a mandate, not a venture investment.

Notable Investments

  • First Mid-Illinois Bancshares — $90M acquisition of First Clover Leaf Financial Corp. — FIG Partners served as financial advisor.
  • CalWest Bancorp — $32M merger with Bank of Southern California, N.A. — Janney (FIG) advised.
  • Layton Park Financial — acquisition by North Shore Bank — FIG Partners served as financial advisor.
  • Home Bancorp Wisconsin, Inc. — $4.08M stock offering — Janney (FIG) served as sole placement agent.
  • Franchise track record: the FIG/Janney community-bank team collectively executed 300+ capital-markets and M&A transactions totaling ~$20 billion over recent years, consistently ranking among the most active advisors in community-bank M&A and capital raising.
